Kentan Facey has cut his list from 30 or 40 scholarship offers to 11 schools and will visit UConn Wednesday, St. John’s Friday and Rutgers next week.
“We just cut his list,” Kareem Memminger, Facey’s AAU coach with the Rens, told SNY.tv Monday.
Memminger said Facey is now considering 11 schools: Rhode Island, UCLA, Providence, Virginia Tech, Memphis, Rutgers, UConn, USC, St. John’s, Xavier and Dayton.
As expected, Villanova has added former Team Takeover 16s and Paul VI associate coach Doug Martin to its staff — which could turn out to have a dramatic impact on recruiting.
Martin replaces Doug West, who is leaving to pursue “other opportunities,” according to a school release.
“We are happy to welcome Doug Martin to our Villanova Basketball family,” head coach Jay Wright said. “Doug is an outstanding young coach with a bright future. I know the Nova Nation will join us in welcoming him to our community.”
Hallice Cooke, one of the top shooting guards in the Class of 2013 out of the Sports U AAU program and two-time defending New Jersey Tournament of Champions winner St. Anthony, will be contributing periodically to ZAGSBLOG entering his senior season. Here’s his third entry:
What’s up, basketball world?
As you all know AAU season is now over, and I must say I miss it already. I had a great summer playing and winning with my Sports U teammates.
Now that that’s over I spent the past week working former Richmond Spider Carlos Cueto’s camp. I had a great time teaching and coaching the young kids.
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Rick Pitino is excited for the upcoming basketball season and not just because his Louisville Cardinals should be the favorite to win the Big East Conference.
Pitino knows that Indiana, Louisville and Kentucky — traditional basketball rivals all located within a few hours of one another — could all contend for an NCAA championship.
According to The Sporting News preseason rankings, Indiana is No. 1, Louisville No. 3 and Kentucky No. 5 (UCLA is No. 2 and Ohio State is No. 4).
“In our region, basketball’s really come back in a big way with Indiana, Kentucky and us,” Pitino told SNY.tv. “It’s been a while since all three have been there so it’s really picked up the fervor of basketball. Basketball is very big in Kentucky and Indiana anyway.”
Mike Young is coming home.
The 6-foot-9 Pittsburgh native decided Friday night and then announced on Saturday that he had chosen Pitt over Florida. The St. Benedict’s Prep power forward made the announcement during a family event while at home. He also considered Memphis, Xavier and Miami.
“Pittsburgh was the best fit for me,” he told SNY.tv by text. “[Assistant] coach [Brandin] Knight is way more than a coach to me. We have a relationship outside of basketball. Me and Coach [Jamie] Dixon had great conversations and he called my mom the most.”

What’s up, basketball fans?
AAU is finally over.
This past AAU year has been a blast. I’ve built a great relationship with everybody on my Sports U team that had a lot of success. We won a total of five championships and reached the final of a sixth (“Live in AC”} and everyone on the team picked up at least one scholarship offer.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun suffered a fractured hip while biking Saturday afternoon and will undergo surgery Saturday night at the John Dempsey Hospital at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, the school said in a statement.
The 70-year-old Calhoun, who was forced to miss his Charity Classic All-Star Game featuring many of his former players Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, was on a bike ride near his home in Madison when the bicycle slipped on some sand, causing the fall.
