    tyusAt this point, incoming Duke freshman point guard Tyus Jones is the grizzled old veteran of USA Basketball.

    At the age of 18.

    The 6-foot-1 Apple Valley, MN native has already won gold medals at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

    When the FIBA Americas U18 World Championship begins Friday in Colorado Springs, CO, Jones will be in pursuit of his third gold in the last four years.

    “I’m a little bit used to it,” Jones told SNY.tv by phone. “My goal in this one obviously is to win a gold medal and trying to be the best leader I can and the ultimate goal is to win the gold medal.”

    One week before one of the more loaded NBA Drafts ever, there will be a dramatic shakeup at the very top.

    Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports! reported that Joel Embiid will undergo surgery Friday in the navicular bone in his right foot, according to Embiid’s agent Arn Tellem.

    “Joel will be unable to participate in any additional workouts, and will not attend the draft in New York,” Tellem told Wojnarowksi.

    Wojnarowksi reported that doctors from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who own the No. 1 pick and worked Embiid out earlier this month, discovered the stress fracture in his right foot and passed that information onto Embiid’s reps.

    ESPN’s Jeff Goodman first reported on Thursday morning that the 7-foot Kansas big man suffered the injury.

    In a rare interview, Our Savior New American 2015 big man Cheick Diallo told Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader he is “happy” to have a Kentucky offer and is impressed that new Wildcats assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen speaks a little French.

    “When Kentucky offered me, I was so happy,” the 6-foot-9 Diallo told Roberts at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va. “I have a lot of top schools, but Kentucky is the best school, you know?”

    Rohrssen moved to Kentucky from Pittsburgh, where he had already established a relationship with the Mali native, in part because he speaks a little French.

    Derryck Thornton, the 6-foot-2 2016 point guard from Findlay Prep, will visit Kentucky from Saturday-Monday and could receive a scholarship offer during the visit, according to a report from Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

    Thornton is currently at the NBPA Top 100 camp in Charlottesville, Va., and plans to drive from there to Lexington.

    “I’m very interested in Kentucky,” Thornton told Roberts. “Coach Cal does a great job with point guards … and pretty much everybody (else). He gets guys to the league, so I want to go out there this weekend and get a good feel for how the players like it and all that.”

    USA Basketball, USA U18 Team

    After being one of the last three cuts for the USA U18 National Team on Sunday, 7-foot center Chase Jeter of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas was added back on to the team Wednesday evening.

    Jeter replaces UNLV commit Dwayne Morgan of Baltimore St. Francis Academy who left the team because his grandmother is ill.

    “Dwayne had to come home on emergency due to the nature of his ailing grandmom,” his mentor Dwayne Wise told SNY.tv.

    “USA Basketball has been very supportive of him and has communicated with his mom since he got back to Baltimore Monday night. He was still on the team and it was decided today that he stay home to ensure they can get a  replacement in enough time. Dwayne is naturally disappointed, wanting badly to play and to rep his country but with mom in grievance, he was needed back.”

    Like many other elite players in the Class of 2016, Malik Monk has been hearing from a lot of college coaches since Sunday at midnight.

    Kentucky’s John Calipari, Kansas’s Bill Self, Indiana’s Tom Crean, Wake Forest’s Danny Manning and Arkansas’s Mike Anderson are among the coaches who have called the 6-foot-4, 180-pound combo guard since Sunday. His latest offers came from Wake Forest and Tulsa.

    “We’re trying to keep it at a level where it’s not overwhelming to him,” Marcus Monk, Malik’s brother, told SNY.tv from the NBA Top 100 Camp in Virginia.
