    • Articles, Fairleigh Dickinson

    Greg Herenda will be introduced at 10:30 a.m. today as the new head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

    SNY.tv reported earlier this week that Walter McCarty was no longer in the mix for the job and that it was Herenda’s to take.

    A North Bergen, N.J., native, Herenda was the coach at Division 2 UMass-Lowell, which is making the jump to D-1.

    Herenda was an assistant to Seton Hall coach George Blaney from 1994-7, and helped bring Shaheen Holloway to the Pirates.

    Marquise Moore, a onetime Hofstra pledge, will visit George Mason and Tulane next week, he told SNY.tv.

    The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Queens native will trip to George Mason Monday-Wednesday and then go to Tulane later in the week.

    Providence, UConn, Fairfield and Hofstra are also involved.

    Moore said Providence watched him at an open gym Wednesday and “wants me to come down to work out with their team.”

    PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — A disoriented and incoherent Bobby Weir collapsed onstage at about 11 p.m. Thursday night during a Furthur concert at the Capitol Theatre and was assisted off-stage by crew members.

    Police told me he was taken away in an ambulance and the Furthur Twitter feed and Website had no update on his medical condition as of 8 a.m. Friday.

    Reached Friday morning by the Marin (Calif.) Independent Journal, Weir’s manager Matt Busch declined comment on his client’s condition and would not say whether Furthur would play Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday as scheduled.

    Bandmate John Kadlecik later said Weir “accidentally took Ambien,” which you can read here.

    Weir, 65, is the longtime rhythm guitarist of The Grateful Dead and the band Furthur was playing its ninth sold-out show in 12 days. His voice and guitar playing had been strong in the previous performances in the run.

    Articles, Lincoln High School

    St. John’s coach Steve Lavin and Minnesota coach Richard Pitino were the latest coaches to stop through Lincoln High School on Tuesday and watch 2014 guard Isaiah Whitehead.

    Lincoln coach Tiny Morton said he’s been hearing a lot from those two schools, as well as Louisville, Syracuse and Texas.

    Arizona, Kentucky and UCLA have also been linked to the 6-foot-4 Whitehead, the latest Lincoln star after Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair and Lance Stephenson.

    St. John’s is the hometown school and will need to add numerous players in the 2014 and ’15 classes and landing Whitehead would be a major get.

    Syracuse will always be a factor and has already landed 2014 New York native Chris McCullough of Brewster (N.H.) Academy, as well as New Jersey’s Tyler Ennis of St. Benedict’s Prep and Tyler Roberson of Roselle Catholic in 2013.

    Articles, Creighton

    Doug McDermott has never played a single game inside Madison Square Garden.

    Now that he’s returning to Creighton for his senior season, he will play there next season, and can compete for a Big East Tournament championship in the World’s Most Famous Arena.

    And he will likely be the Big East Preseason Player of the Year during Creighton’s first season in the new league.

    “I’ve always wanted to play in the Garden, I never have,” McDermott said after Creighton lost to Duke in the NCAA Tournament. “I’ve been to New York City once for a tournament, but I’ve never even seen the Garden. So that definitely does play into it.

    “I feel like we can compete there next year and it’s something to look forward to.”

    Knicks

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The Knicks will face an emotional crowd and a desperate team in Game 3 in Boston on Friday night, but if they come away with the win they will push the Celtics to the brink of elimination.

    Fourteen NBA teams have come back from an 0-2 deficit but none has ever overcome an 0-3 hole.

    “We have a great opportunity ahead of us to go in there and try to get up 3-0,” said Carmelo Anthony, who is averaging 35 points per game in the series. “That’s our goal. We’re going there trying to win the basketball game. If we can do that, we’ll be OK.”
