    The Atlantic 10 Conference Council of Presidents has unanimously voted to formally accept Butler University’s application for membership, the league announced Tuesday.

    Butler will join the A-10 on July 1, 2013. The Bulldogs field 17 of the A-10’s 21 championship sports and will begin competition in those sports starting with the 2013-14 academic year.

    “The Presidents of the A-10 member schools could not be more enthusiastic about adding Butler University to our conference,” said Father Michael J. Graham, Xavier University President and Chair of the Atlantic 10 Council of Presidents.

    Transfers

    Xavier point guard Mark Lyons visited Kentucky Monday and heads to Arizona Friday, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

    “Just get a feel for the place, see how it looks and the environment,” Lyons told the Daily Star of his goals for this weekend at Arizona. Playing point guard “is a big factor because I want to play more point than I did in my past.”

    Lyons, who will finish Xavier’s spring semester on Friday and be eligible to play immediately next year, also plans a visit to Kansas, but no date has been set.

    Former Wake Forest center Carson Desrosiers made the call on Tuesday.

    The7-footer from Windham, N.H., picked Providence over Vanderbilt and Oregon State.

    “Just committed to PC,” he said by text. “I connected with Coach [Ed] Cooley instantly and everybody’s excited for the immediate future of PC basketball, including myself.”

    He will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting one season.

    NEW YORK — Can new Nike football uniforms help impact recruiting at Rutgers?

    Head coach Kyle Flood and the players believe they can.

    “I think it will be easy for recruits to recognize us,” Rutgers senior defensive tackle Scott Vallone told SNY.tv at the SNY studios when the uniforms were unveiled. “It will be a distinct look that incorporates a Scarlet Knight and battle ‘scars.’ I think it will be something that people will be able to identify us with and that will be a very positive thing for recruiting.”

    The new uniforms were unveiled for the players Monday at the Hale Center and junior wide receiver Mark Harrison said the players got fired up when they saw them.

    “It was so loud in there, I’m still getting my hearing back right now,” Harrison said. “It was exciting.”
