    Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley scored a major coup Thursday when he landed one of the top junior college guards in the nation in Xavier Munford of Iowa Western.

    The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Munford played for Hurley at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark and  has two years of eligibility remaining.

    “I chose URI because of the great connection with Coach Hurley and the rest of the staff,” Munford, who averaged a team-best 16.6 points and 3.1 rebounds, told SNY.tv. “The Atlantic 10 is a great conference, but I also had offers from Oregon, Creighton, Washington St. and Central Michigan.”

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. –- At practice on the day before the Knicks look to climb out of an 0-2 first-round playoff hole against the Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden, interim head coach Mike Woodson confirmed that Carmelo Anthony will start at power forward.

    That’s the good news seeing as how he flourished there last month with Amar’e Stoudemire sidelined with a bulging disk in his lower back.

    The bad news is that Anthony technically playing out of position on Thursday night is one of few certainties for a Knicks lineup that is very much in flux with the season nearing the brink.

    Savon Goodman is one of the most athletic wing players still available in the Class of 2012 and he will being his visit schedule by tripping unofficially to Seton Hall on Friday, not Thursday as I had originally understood.

    Philly Constitution coach Rob Moore informed SNY.tv of the news and said he’s also working on setting up official visits to UNLV and Pitt.

    “The kid is looking to start school in June and be on campus somewhere working towards a degree so this process is going to move very quickly,” Moore told SNY.tv Thursday.

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — With all the headlines about Amar’e Stoudemire and his battle with the fire extinguisher, it may be easy to forget that the Knicks are on the brink of NBA ignominy.

    New York has lost 12 straight playoff games dating back to 2001 and with a loss Thursday in Game 3 against the Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden, they would set a new NBA record with 13 straight postseason defeats.

    “Sure, it’s an incentive,” Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson said Wednesday. “I’m not one for excuses, but this team hasn’t been together that long. Tyson [Chandler]’s first year in, short season, no camp. There are a lot of things that are at stake here. Expectations are high.”
