NEW ORLEANS — Crazy things happen when a state becomes divided along basketball lines.

On Monday, at a dialysis center in Georgetown, Ky., Louisville fan Charles Taylor hit Kentucky fan Ed Wilson after the former said Wilson gave him the finger.

“I went up to him and I hit him,” Taylor reportedly said. “Didn’t hit him that hard, but I hit him.”

“The Louisville fan punched out the Kentucky fan?” Wildcats coach John Calipari asked Thursday when informed of the event. “I’m dissappointed by that.”

NEW ORLEANS — Villanova juniors Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns should not come out for the NBA Draft, one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv.

“What’s going through his head?” the scout asked of Cheek, who sources confirmed to SNY.tv is considering coming out this year. “I mean, it’s crazy. What has he done that makes him think he can go into the draft?

“It doesn’t make any sense. He was higher-rated coming out of high school than he is now.”

NEW ORLEANS —  The North Carolina trio of junior forward John Henson, sophomore forward Harrison Barnesand sophomore point guard Kendall Marshall will enter the 2012 NBA Draft, the school announced Thursday.

DraftExpress.com has Barnes No. 7, Henson No. 8 and Marshall No. 15 on its list of Top 100 prospects.

“It’s a great day for three youngsters who are taking another step toward their ultimate goal of playing professional basketball,” head coach Roy Williams said. “On a very small stage, it’s a sad day for me because I won’t get to coach them again. All Tar Heel fans will miss them greatly, as well.

“I really look forward to watching Harrison, John and Kendall play in the NBA. I know theywill be very successful. They have been and will always be great Tar Heels.”

NEW ORLEANS — The check Rick Pitino wrote on John Calipari’s behalf back in 1988 got him in hot water with his wife because he couldn’t pay her Saks Fifth Avenue bill.

Elaborating on a story he has told in the past, Pitino told SNY.tv that he wrote a check for $5,000 or $10,000 to help cover Calipari’s expenses when he was hired at UMass in 1988.

“John doesn’t know this but I know it to be the truth,” Pitino told SNY.tv Thursday following his regular interview session with the media.
