    EmbiidKansas coach Bill Self says injured center Joel Embiid is “progressing nicely” but won’t  play in the team’s first NCAA Tournament game Friday.

    “He’s progressing nicely,” Self said Monday. “The medical staff feels good about where he is, but no, there’s no update on a timeframe.”

    Kansas is the No. 2 seed in the South and faces No. 15 Eastern Kentucky on Friday in St. Louis. Assuming they win, the Jayhawks would face the winner between No. 7 New Mexico and No. 10 Stanford.

    The 7-foot Embiid has been out with a back injury since March 1.

    If Embiid doesn’t play in the second game, it’s possible he could return for the Sweet 16.

    St. John’s will not be going to the NCAA Tournament, but the Red Storm still have the opportunity to win a championship and they won’t even need to leave New York City to do so.

    Two and a half hours after the field of 68 was revealed, St. John’s was awarded a No. 1 seed for the NIT, where they will face Northeast Conference regular-season champion and eighth-seeded Robert Morris on Tuesday evening at Carnesecca Arena in Queens.

    NCAA Basketball: Big Ten Tournament Michigan State v MichiganThe Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament may be the “Region of Death,” but no Region has as many major conference tournament champions as the East.

    The East features the ACC tournament champion in No. 1 Virginia, Big 12 champion in No. 3 Iowa State, Big Ten champion in No. 4 Michigan State, A-10 champion in No. 10 St. Joe’s and Big East champion in No. 11 Providence.

    The East also has No. 2 Villanova, the Big East regular-season champ; No. 6 North Carolina, which beat Michigan State, Louisville and Kentucky during a wild season; and No. 7 UConn, which finished third in the American. Villanova and UConn could meet in a Big East reunion in the Round of 32 on Saturday in Buffalo.

    When Manhattan was revealed as a No. 13 seed in the loaded Midwest Region during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday evening, it was immediately viewed as a big deal as 13 was thought to be the Jaspers’ high end after winning the MAAC Tournament on Monday evening.

    The opponent waiting for the Jaspers on Thursday in Orlando is No. 4 seed Louisville, which may be seeded too low. The Cardinals have won 12 of 13, romped through the American Athletic Conference Tournament over the weekend and even head coach Rick Pitino proclaimed that his team would probably be a 1-seed. 

    No matter, though, because while the game between the reigning national champion and this season’s MAAC Tournament winner provides intrigue, it pales in comparison to the eye-opening coaching matchup that awaits.
