BUFFALO –– With his team trailing St. Joe’s by five points at halftime here at the HSBC Arena, Shabazz Napier sat inside the UConn locker room aware that his college career was one half from extinction.
St. Joe’s was ahead of UConn by five points and was riding a wave of momentum when Napier, who had only 5 points himself at the break, had his moment of clarity.
“I told myself, ‘This could be it,'” Napier confided after the game. “I told myself this could be my last game if I don’t give it my all. That’s one thing I wouldn’t want. I would regret me not giving everything I possibly can for this team and I just told myself I didn’t want to lose.”

Things were looking great for Cincinnati and Sean Kilpatrick in February.
The Bearcats were ranked No. 6 in the country and had a robust 22-2 record. Kilpatrick, from Yonkers, N.Y., was a Player of the Year candidate and the Bearcats were the toast of the country.
It was going to be a great March for Cincinnati, and a coming out party for Kilpatrick, who scored more than 2,000 points in his college career.
Unfortunately, that — and winning a share of the American Athletic Conference title — were the high watermarks of Cincinnati’s season.

BUFFALO — Anybody who’s watched Syracuse over the course of this season knows that a confident and effective Trevor Cooney can mean the difference between winning and losing.
It’s probably no coincidence that Cooney’s late-season struggles coincided with the Orange losing five of their final seven games.
Since draining 11-of-15 shots for 33 points in a win over Notre Dame on Feb. 3, Cooney hadn’t made more than four field goals in a game. The Orange went 5-5 during that span.
In starting the season 25-0, Cooney made four or more field goals 15 times.

When Louisville was awarded the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region on Sunday evening, that struck many people as a surprise given the Cardinals have won 12 of their last last 13, including the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino doesn’t have a problem with the seed. His problem lies with the fact that the seeding committee has his team playing 13th-seeded Manhattan, which is coached by former Cardinals assistant and Pitino disciple Steve Masiello.
“I think the pairings sometimes lack common sense,” Pitino said Wednesday in Orlando. “I don’t think they would put somewhere down the road Duke-North Carolina, so the matchups don’t make sense to me. I’m OK with the seedings. I’m not OK with the matchups.”

BUFFALO — Ronald Roberts and St. Joe’s were playing against St. John’s in the first round of the NIT last season when he had his first interaction with Johnnies head coach Steve Lavin.
“He stopped me and he said he would like to talk to me about everything that happened because he never called me [during recruiting] or nothing like that,” the 6-foot-8 Roberts, who starred at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, told SNY.tv here as St. Joe’s prepared to play UConn in an East Region game Thursday evening.
Reflecting on the game, which the Johnnies won, Lavin told SNY.tv: “It’s nice when it works out for everyone. I had the opportunity to briefly speak with Ronald after our NIT game at St. Joe’s last season and it was evident he is a true gentleman. I’m happy that he has had an outstanding career at St. Joe’s.”
