    Chris WalkerFlorida freshman Chris Walker is taking one online class and could potentially join the lineup by the Jimmy V Classic Dec. 17 in New York, according to a report by ESPN’s Andy Katz during UConn’s 65-64 victory over the Gators Monday.

    The 6-foot-10 McDonald’s All-American out of Holmes County (Fla.) High School is attempting to reach the NCAA Division I level’s minimum requirement for freshman eligibility.

    Florida is currently playing without several key players coach Billy Donovan had counted on, including Walker, point guard Kasey Hill (ankle), big man Damontre Harris (indefinite suspenion) and guard Eli Carter (broken leg), who will take a medical redshirt this year, sources told SNY.tv.

    The Rutgers transfer broke his right leg in February of last season while at Rutgers. He was averaging 14.9 points per game.

    Donovan told reporters Sunday that Carter would likely be redshirted.

    The state of Texas is loaded with talent, with De’Aaron Fox leading the next generation in the Lone Star State.

    The smooth lefty out of Cypress Lakes High School is tearing it up at the beginning of his sophomore year, leading the team to the best start in school history at 7-1, most recently scoring 27 points, and adding 14 rebounds in a win over Dallas Richland. 

    “(The season), it’s been going well,” Fox told SNY.tv. “This is our best start as a program ever and I’ve been playing well.”

    Despite his lackluster play last week in the Bahamas, NBA executives and scouts are still understandably high on Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins.

    “His status isn’t about what he IS, it’s about what he CAN become,” one NBA GM who would take Wiggins No. 1 overall told SNY.tv.

    Wiggins averaged just 8 points and 5 rebounds in Kansas’ last two games in the Bahamas — a loss to eventual champion Villanova and a win over UTEP — but by all accounts he was very ill.

    “He was sick the whole trip but he still has to play and bring it,” said a source close to the Kansas program.

    Memphis

    Memphis capped a huge weekend by garnering honors for Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols on Monday.

    Goodwin was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while Nichols earned Rookie of the Week honors.

    Goodwin was named MVP of the Old Spice Classic after he led Memphis to three wins in the tournament, including a 73-68 victory against No. 5 Oklahoma State in the championship game.

    NEW YORK — First it was Anthony Davis.  Then came Nerlens Noel.  Now it seems that sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein is taking the defensive reins for the third-ranked Kentucky Wildcats and is continuing the lineage of great shot-blockers that  John Calipari has coached.

    On a night when Davis fractured his left hand at Madison Square Garden, the 7-foot Cauley-Stein had a career high nine blocks on Sunday night in a 79-65 win over Providence at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  In a game where the Wildcats led by only four at halftime, Cauley-Stein was the difference maker.

    “To have nine blocks in a game like this, that’s big-time, big-time,” Calipari said.

    NEW YORK — On Friday afternoon, Kentucky coach John Calipari hopped on WFAN in New York and talked college basketball with Mike Francesa.  Francesa asked some good questions to the coach of the third-ranked team in the country but, in his inimitable style, rarely allowed Calipari to finish more than a sentence before cutting him off.

    For instance, at one point, Francesa asked: “How did Wiggins get to Kansas?”

    Calipari began to respond, “Well, I think again we had a whole group of guys and…” but Francesa interrupted him with “Did you recruit? Were you close? You had to be close on Wiggins. You’re close on everybody…How good is Wiggins?”

    NEW YORK — New Orleans center Anthony Davis suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left hand during the first quarter of the team’s 103-99 win Sunday over the Knicks.

    “Going up for a lob [in the] first quarter, I got fouled and hit my hand on the rim,” Davis said as he sat at his locker after the game with his left hand wrapped.

    It remains unclear how long Davis — averaging 19.6 points and 10.6 rebounds — will be out.

    “I haven’t found anything out yet,” he said. “Most definitely hope that it’s a short-term thing, get back on the floor.”
