To the surprise of virtually no one, Rochester (Mich.) shooting guard James Young committed to Kentucky Thursday afternoon on ESPNU.

The 6-foot-6 left-hander had said all summer that Kentucky was his No. 1 choice, and in the end he picked the Wildcats over Michigan State, Syracuse and Kansas.

“I will be heading to the University of Kentucky,” Young said as he held up a “Kentucky bound” shirt.

Seton Hall is still awaiting its first commitment in the Class of 2013 but they hope to get some movement after this weekend.

The Pirates will host Austin Colbert, Jevon Thomas and Jerron Wilbut for official visits, and several others for unofficials.

The 6-foot-9 Colbert will take an official visit to campus Friday-Sunday.

“Yes, I am,” Colbert told SNY.tv.

He has already visited Miami and Illinois and is down to those three.

Karl Towns is doing a double-dip this weekend.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore big man from St. Joe’s-Metuchen will take an unofficial visit to West Virginia Friday from about 10 a.m. to noon before hitting Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness Friday night.

Towns is related to former West Virginia star Da’Sean Butler, now a member of the Mounties staff.

“They took care of Da’Sean Butler so I can’t thank them enough,” Towns told Alex Schiffer.

After that he heads to Big Blue Madness at Kentucky.

If Kentucky adds Andrew Wiggins to a recruiting class that now includes James Young and Andrew and Aaron Harrison, head coach John Calipari could be moving toward his greatest recruiting class in history.

That’s what the Director of Scouting for one NBA team in the 2012 lottery told SNY.tv Thursday morning.

“On paper, for an NBA-type class certainly it’s the greatest of all time, you would think,” the Director of Scouting said by phone. “On paper it would be and yet there’s a lot to measure up to, too.”

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Brace yourself, Yankee fans.

Carmelo Anthony is rooting for the Orioles in this playoff series.

“Yes, I been a Oriole fan since I was like 8 years old,” Anthony, a Baltimore native, said Wednesday after practice. “I actually got a [Oriole] tattoo on me.”

Told that the Orioles haven’t been in the playoffs since 1997, Anthony said, “That’s a long time.”

The Knicks traveled to Washington, D.C., Wednesday, the same day the Yankees and Orioles will play Game 3 of their series at Yankee Stadium.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. –– It was a tough day for the Smith brothers of Millstone, N.J. Wednesday at Knicks practice.

The team announced that Chris Smith, a rookie shooting guard, will miss 3-6 months with left patella tendon surgery. Smith, out of Louisville, will have the surgery at 6 a.m. Thursday, the day the Knicks open the preseason in Washington against the Wizards.

Meantime, J.R. Smith, Chris’s older brother, said he was “disappointed” both in his brother’s situation and in the fact that he will come off the bench this season and won’t start at shooting guard.
