Hazell Stoudemire, the older brother of Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire, was killed Monday morning in a car crash in Florida and Amar’e has taken a leave of absence from the team.
“He has left for Florida to be with his family,” a Knicks spokesman said.
The new of Hazell’s death was first reported by TMZ.
The accident occurred on Route 27 in Lake Wales, Fla. The Florida Highway Patrol said Stoudemire was driving at a “high rate of speed” when he collided with the rear of a tractor trailer, TMZ reported.
Stoudemire, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died on the scene.
The Knicks host Utah Monday night and leave for Washington Wednesday. It remains unclear how long Amar’e will be away from the team.
