After Luke Harangody left Notre Dame following the 2009-10 season, the Irish were picked seventh in the Big East preseason coaches’ poll.

They finished second.

This year Notre Dame will be without Ben Hansbrough, the reigning Big East Player of the Year, as well as several other key departed players, and the coaches may once again sleep on the Irish.

It wouldn’t surprise Tim Abromaitis one bit.

“It seems like it happens every year with us, where we lose a senior who had a great career and everybody forgets about us a little bit,” Abromaitis said in a recent phone interview.

For a while it seemed as if Syracuse and Kentucky were in a two-team race for DaJuan Coleman, the 6-foot-10, 285-pound center from Jamesville DeWitt High School.

But now that Coleman has spent more time this summer with Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger, the Buckeyes are on level ground with the Orange and the Wildcats.

“They’re definitely equal now that I did a little more research and stuff like that,” Coleman told SNY.tv by phone from the adidas Nations event in Los Angeles.

Coleman said Sullinger, whom he has known for several years, has pitched him the idea of coming to Ohio State, possibly to replace Sullinger after he heads to the NBA following his sophomore season.

New York City fans will get a chance to see some of the top high ballers in the nation this Saturday.

The 1st Annual “Franchise Classic” Memorial game will be held at 7 p.m. at Col. Young Park on 145th Street and Lenox Avenue.

This game is a memorial to the legendary streetball player John “Franchise” Strickland and will feature some of the top high school players from around the country, as Team USA, against the top players from the NYC Tri-state area as Team NYC.

This game is free entry and open to the public. There will be free giveaways for fans. The game is sponsored by Inside Streetball and the Tri-State tournament.

Highly regarded forward Mitch McGary of Brewster (N.H.) Academy has trimmed his list to six schools: Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan, Duke and Kentucky.

“He’s seriously interested in all six to check them out,” Tim McGary, Mitch’s father, told SNY.tv by phone.

“He’s going to go to Florida this week. And we’re going ty try to visit Kentucky and North Carolina and Duke. He’s already been to those other two [Maryland and Michigan].”

Tim said the Kentucky visit could happen “before he goes back to Brewster [Sept. 10], as soon as Coach Cal comes back. Probably at the end of the month.”

St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley admits he hasn’t seen every top high school player in the nation, but he’ll put Kyle Anderson up against anybody.

“I would say if there’s a better all-around player in the country, that kid must be awful good because I think Kyle is as good an all-around player as I think you can have in high school,” the Naismith Hall of Fame coach told SNY.tv.

After wowing coaches at the Peach Jam and in Las Vegas, the 6-foot-8 Anderson finished up his summer by leading the Playaz Basketball Club to titles at the Desert Duel in Arizona and the End of Summer Classic at Albright College in Pa.

Javan Felix, a 5-foot-11 point guard from New Orleans St. Augustine, verbally pledged to Texas Monday night.

Felix also considered Oregon and Virginia.

Felix told ESPN.com that D.J. Augustin, a former Longhorn and fellow New Orleans native, was influential in his decision.

“Me and D.J. have had a close relationship since I’ve been in high school,” Felix told ESPN.com. “He told me that Coach Barnes would never play games with me; he’ll always tell me how it is and he’d never lie to me. Through this process he never lied to me one time. With recruiting and how it is, that’s a big thing for me. D.J. told me that coach would be like another father and that’s what I was looking for.”
