The flurry of NBA players sent packing to the D-League keeps on coming.

Sacramento Kings center Hassan Whiteside, who has ties to Newark East Side High School and Greenburgh, N.Y., was sent to the Reno Bighorns on Monday.

Whiteside, the No. 33 pick in this year’s draft, is the ninth NBA player on assignment to the D-League this season, joining 2009 first-round picks Terrence Williams and Christian Eyenga; 2010 first-round picks Cole Aldrich, Patrick Patterson and Ed Davis; and 2010 second-round picks Dexter Pittman, Solomon Alabi and Gani Lawal.

Texas Christian University has accepted an invitation for full membership into the Big East Conference.

The Big East, by a vote of its Presidents and Chancellors, extended the invitation for membership.

TCU will become the 17th conference member — and ninth football program — on July 1, 2012.  Its athletic teams will begin competing in the Big East in the 2012-13 academic year.

With an enrollment of 9,142 in Fort Worth, Texas, TCU competes in 20 sports.  The university’s Chancellor is Dr. Victor J. Boschini, Jr. and the Athletics Director is Chris Del Conte.  The university was founded in 1873.

Texas Christian University will hold a 2 p.m. EST press conference Monday to announce that it will join the Big East Conference in all sports beginning in the 2012-13 season.

“I guess you gotta do what you gotta do with what’s out there,” former Syracuse athletic director Jake Crouthamel said by phone. “And what’s out there with TCU in football is certainly very attractive.  It’s the other programs that I think just from a travel perspective, it’s going to be very expensive.”

“But having said that, TCU is showing its stuff as a football program. That adds a  lot of credibility to the Big East, which it certainly needs.”

NEW YORK — While Villanova’s guards were subdued in Friday’s NIT Season Tip-Off championship loss to Tennessee, one bright spot for the Wildcats was the play of sophomore big  man Mouphtaou Yarou.

After putting up 13 points and 16 rebounds in the semifinal victory over UCLA, the 6-foot-10, 250-pound Yarou led all Villanova scorers with 15 points and five rebounds in the 78-68 loss to the Vols.

The native of Benin in West Africa is averaging 10.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks for the season.

“Coach always says he want me to play hard,” Yarou said after the UCLA game.
