In what can’t come as a shock to many, 6-foot-10 center Cody Zeller has chosen Indiana over Butler and North Carolina.
“Until about a week ago, I didn’t know it was right,” Zeller said during the announcement, according to the Indianapolis Star. “Next year, I’m going to go to IU. The biggest thing was the players and the coaches. They had a good combination of the two.”
“I knew it was the right thing for me,” Zeller added. “It was a tough process, but I enjoyed it. … I didn’t tell hardly anyone.”
Zeller, out of Washington (Indiana), is the No. 4 rated power forward in the Class of 2011, per Rivals.com.
I think we all understand that college basketball is not Mike Francesa’s primary area of expertise.
The Yankees, the National Football League and the ponies? Yes.
College hoops and college hoops recruiting? Not so much.
Still, what happened on WFAN Wednesday was just embarrassing.
Francesa interviewed four local college coaches — Fordham’s Tom Pecora, Rutgers’ Mike Rice, St. John’s Steve Lavin and UConn’s Jim Calhoun — and could not have been more out of it. (All the audio can be found here.)
NEW YORK — St. John’s on Wednesday received signed Letters of Intent from four recruits — Maurice Harkless, D’Angelo Harrison, JaKarr Sampson and Nurideen Lindsey.
On Thursday the Johnnies expect to introduce their newest signee: Sir’Dominic Pointer.
That’s right.
The man formerly known as Dominique Pointer has legally changed his name.
“His mama said he wanted his name to be Sir’Dom,” Tony Nolan, Pointer’s father, said by phone. “It’s supposed to be like that from jump street.
NEW YORK — In case there were any doubts, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said senior guard Keon Lawrence will play Friday at No. 22 Temple.
“He’s playing,” Willard said Thursday at a coaches’ reception at Madison Square Garden that also featured Steve Lavin of St. John’s, Mike Rice of Rutgers, Dan Hurley of Wagner and John Dunne of St. Peter’s.
Asked if he was counting on Lawrence to make significant contributions in the Temple game, Willard said, “Oh yeah. I think Keon’s had a very positive and progressive offseason. It’s just a matter of, he had knee surgery in July but he’s come back and he’s been working hard and he’s been playing well.”
