    • Penn State, Rice, Seton Hall, St. John's

    Freddie Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound combo guard from New Haven (Conn.) Hillhouse, signed with Seton Hall, according to Hillhouse coach Ty Sullivan.

    Wilson, who averaged 21 points, eight assists and five rebounds, also considered Fordham and Drexel.

    “He’s a combination guard,” New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski said. “Very high energy. Quick, very aggressive. Never takes a step backward. He attacks the basket and is always in attack mode. Not a pure point, not a pure shooter, but very high energy. He can be a very good press player.”

    Steve Lavin and St. John’s won’t have much time to recover from their early-morning West Coast loss to St. Mary’s.

    After falling to the Gaels 76-71 in an ESPN game that began at 2 a.m. EST Tuesday, the Johnnies had to fly back East and prepare for their home opener Wednesday night with Columbia.

    “We wanted to open with this sort of tough matchup, where you get a report card and you can really get to work. I liked our competitiveness and cohesiveness,” Lavin said.

    Adam Finkelstein’s National Prep Showcase runs this weekend, Nov. 19-21, at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.

    Among those scheduled to play are St. John’s commits Maurice Harkless of South Kent (Conn.) and JaKarr Sampson of Brewster (N.H.)     With the NCAA early signing period ending Wednesday, it appears that several top recruits will wait until the spring.

    Among those looking to sign late are DeAndre Daniels (pictured), the No. 9 prospect in the Rivals150 for the Class of 2011, No. 17 Ben McLemore, No. 26 Adjehi Baru, No. 34 Trevor Lacey, No. 47 Michael Chandler, No. 51 Amir Garrett, No. 76 Angelo Chol, No. 77 LeAntwan Luckett, No. 84 Jarion Henry, No. 109 Elijah Carter, No. 121 Josh Richardson and No. 131 Desmond Hubert.

    Kevin Johnson of Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft, Kevin Thomas of Christian Faith Center Academy (N.C.) and Phil Greene of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., also look to be signing late. Several other players may sign late, including A.J. English, Joey De La Rosa, Anthony Norris, Shaq Stokes and Chris Martin.

    St. Peter’s College senior guard Wesley Jenkins was playing in a pickup game Oct. 1 at the Jersey City school when he first felt discomfort in his right knee.

    “I was going up for a layup and came down wrong,” the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Jenkins said in a phone interview. “I  didn’t know it was messed up, so I kept playing.”

    Jenkins went to see the trainer the following day and that’s when he received some potentially devastating news from the team doctor, Dr. Tom Wickiewicz of the Hospital for Special Surgery: he had a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

    “The first thing that came in my mind was this is supposed to be our year to win and for me to be going down with an ACL injury complicates the whole season,” Jenkins said.
