
Schools like Michigan, USC, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, and Florida State were interested.
“They were all there. The offers just flooded in,” recalled Holy Spirit head coach Bill Walsh.
A 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker whom Walsh calls “an extremely gifted young man,” Witherspoon settled on Michigan the summer before notching a New Jersey-best 27 sacks, while leading his team to an undefeated 2007 season and winning the Non-Public Group 3 state title.
