PISCATAWAY, N.J. –– As an All-American linebacker coming out Absecon (N.J.) Holy Spirit High School, Marcus Witherspoon had his pick of colleges.
Schools like Michigan, USC, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, and Florida State were interested.
“They were all there. The offers just flooded in,” recalled Holy Spirit head coach Bill Walsh.
A 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker whom Walsh calls “an extremely gifted young man,” Witherspoon settled on Michigan the summer before notching a New Jersey-best 27 sacks, while leading his team to an undefeated 2007 season and winning the Non-Public Group 3 state title.
