    Memphis guard Tyreke Evans has been selected Freshman of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

    The 6-foot-6 Evans, MVP of last year’s McDonald’s All-American Game, has thrived since Memphis coach John Calipari moved him to point guard from the wing following a loss to Syracuse that dropped the Tigers to 6-3.

    The Tigers have won 27 straight heading into a West Regional semifinal Thursday with Missouri.

    During the first nine games, Evans averaged 14.8 points and 3.5 assists while looking tentative. Since then, he’s averaged 17.2 points and 5.1 assists. He leads Memphis in scoring (16.6), steals (2.0) and assists (3.9).

    Just as A.J. Price and UConn seem poised for another Final Four run comes breaking news from Yahoo! Sports that UConn violated NCAA rules in the recruitment of former guard Nate Miles.

    The extensive report, written by Adrian Wojnarowski and Dan Wetzel, says Miles was provided with lodging, transportation, restaurant meals and representation by Josh Nochimson – a professional sports agent and former UConn student manager – between 2006 and 2008. As a representative of UConn’s athletic interests, NCAA rules barred Nochimson from having contact with Miles or from providing him with anything of value.

    Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez says the Pirates will be in the top “six or eight” of the Big East next season with the additions of three transfers — Keon Lawrence, Herb Pope and Jeff Robinson — as well as big man Melvyn Oliver.

    “I am very excited,” Gonzalez told the Star-Ledger at last night’s Tournament of Champions final, won by St. Patrick over Newark Science 73-57. “We finished strong this year and won seven of our last 12. I think we will be in the top six or eight teams in the Big East and a factor for the NCAA tournament. I’m excited, the sky’s the limit.”
