Derrick Favors could decide on a school “any day now,” according to Hulio Smith, one of Favors’ AAU coaches with the Atlanta Celtics.

“Looks like he may go in the early period now,” Smith wrote in a text message Tuesday morning. “Hopefully any day now. Everyone will find out at the same time as he will do it live on ESPNU.”

The 6-foot-9, 270-pound Favors out of South Atlanta High is the No. 1 center in the Class of 2009. He will choose from among Georgia, Georgia Tech and N.C. State, Smith said.

Memphis and Florida State are apparently no longer in the mix. Favors had planned to visit Memphis but that visit did not take place.

Arizona, Louisville, Maryland

Maryland freshman Jin Soo Kim was declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse on Monday. The 6-foot-8 Kim, a tremendous shooter, can begin practicing with the team on Wednesday.

“The Maryland basketball team is very happy for Jin Soo,” Maryland Coach Gary Williams said.

The NCAA Clearinghouse initially denied Kim’s eligibility, but after receiving additional documentation regarding online correspondence courses Kim took at South Kent (Conn.), the Clearinghouse declared him eligible.

Elsewhere, Louisville got a commitment from Justin Martin, a 6-7 junior wing from Lawrence North in Indianapolis who has never played a varsity game. Martin chose the Cardinals over Cincinnati, Dayton, Miami (Fla.) and Xavier.

Rutgers Football

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Things got so bad for Mike Teel at Rutgers that he would avoid people when going to class or picking up a sandwich at the deli.

He was booed by the Rutgers fans during his last home game. And in the immediate aftermath of that contest, a two-point victory over UConn on Oct. 18, two middle-aged male fans yelled at head coach Greg Schiano to replace the team’s offensive coordinator.

But that was then, and this is now.

Duke, John Wall, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Miami, N.C. State

John Wall, the No. 1 basketball recruit in the nation, and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski had a phone conversation Monday night that could be the precursor to Duke offering Wall a scholarship.

“We talked about recruiting,” Wall said Tuesday in a text message.

Wall said he plans to take an unofficial visit to Duke, but it won’t be Wednesday when the Blue Devils play Lenoir-Rhyne in an exhibition.

“I’m going to visit but not this week,” said Wall, whose home is 45 minutes from the Duke campus.
