Is Durand Scott down to two schools?
Mike Anthony of the Hartford Courant says Scott is down to UConn and Miami and will announce soon, according to UConn freshman Kemba Walker, Scott’s former teammate at Rice. The early signing period begins Wednesday.
Scott previously had cut his list to Pitt, UConn and Miami. Scott and Rice coach Moe Hicks did not answer their phones when I called for comment, and sources at Pitt, UConn and Miami say they still haven’t heard what the 6-4 guard plans to do.
Michael Snaer, the No. 5 shooting guard in the Class of 2009, could announce his college choice this week.
Snaer initially said he would announce Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period, but has now pushed that back. Until when remains unclear.
Snaer, out of Moreno Valley (CA) Rancho Verde, will choose from among Kansas, Florida State and Marquette. He eliminated UCLA and Missouri, according to JayhawkSlant.com.
“I want to get it out of the way. I think it’s that time,” Snaer told Gary Bedore of KUSports.com.

** Lazar Hayward scored 23 points and Jerel McNeal added 22, making new coach Buzz Williams a winner in No. 16 Marquette’s 94-73 victory over Division II Colorado State-Pueblo. Wesley Matthews had 16 points before leaving the game late in the second half after he appeared to turn an ankle and had to be helped off the court. The severity of his injury was not immediately known.
It’s three days before the beginning of the NCAA early signing period and Durand Scott is still on the board.
The 6-foot-4 Scott, the No. 9 shooting guard in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, is expected to choose from among Miami, UConn and Pittsburgh, the three schools to which he has taken officials.
“There’s no more visits scheduled. This is pretty much it,” Dwayne Mitchell, Scott’s coach with the New York Gauchos, said recently. “It’s pretty much the three that he visited. We’ll try and make a decision that makes sense.”
Pitt associate head coach Tom Herrion attended a practice at Rice High School on Friday, but Scott was on crutches after badly spraining his ankle in the Metro Classic last month. Scott is expected to be in a walking boot for another couple of weeks.
