Today is the first day of the NCAA early signing period and Rice guard Durand Scott is not expected to make an announcement on this day.

The 6-foot-4 Scott previously said he was down to Miami, UConn and Pitt, but his former teammate, UConn freshman guard Kemba Walker, says he will choose between Miami and UConn.

A source close to the situation said Scott will announce “sometime during the early signing period.”

Big East

PROVIDENCE – John Marinatto, who has served as senior associate commissioner of The BIG EAST Conference since 2002, has been named Commissioner of the conference. The appointment was made by a unanimous vote of the league’s Chancellors and Presidents.

Marinatto will succeed Mike Tranghese, who is stepping down as Commissioner in June 2009. Marinatto will assume Commissioner’s duties on July 1, 2009.

“For 30 years, The BIG EAST Conference has enjoyed tremendous success and one of the keys to that success has been the stability in the Commissioner’s chair,” said Richard L. McCormick, President of Rutgers University and Chair of the BIG EAST Presidents. “John Marinatto has been a critical contributor to the growth of the conference for many years and he will continue the lineage of effective leadership for the BIG EAST.”

Seton Hall

Michael Glover is no longer enrolled at Seton Hall and it appears his dream of playing for the Pirates is finally over.

“Glover is no longer a student at Seton Hall,” Seton Hall spokesman Matt Sweeney said.

Glover, a 6-foot-6 forward from the Bronx, was ruled ineligible last fall after enrolling at Seton Hall.

He argued in a lawsuit against the NCAA and the Big East in August that the NCAA never gave a reason for invalidating his entire senior year transcript from American Christian Academy in Pennsylvania.

Count Derrick Favors and Latavious Williams among the elite prospects who may wait until the spring to choose a college.

The NCAA early signing period begins Wednesday.

The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Favors, the No. 3 prospect in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, is down to Georgia, Georgia Tech and N.C. State.

Hulio Smith, one of Favors’ AAU coaches with the Atlanta Celtics, sent me a text message Monday night saying that Favors would “probably [sign] in the late period.”

Dominic Cheek, Rutgers, St. Anthony, St. Benedict's, St. John's

Playing his first game at Rutgers as a member of the Scarlet Knights, Mike Rosario didn’t disappoint in RU’s 91-56 exhibition rout of Division 2 Caldwell College Monday night.

The McDonald’s All-American out of St. Anthony in Jersey City poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from 3. He added 4 steals, 3 assists and 3 turnovers.

Junior center Hamady N’Diaye (pictured courtesy Jim O’Connor/NJ Sport Pics) posted a triple-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Yet the news was not all good for Rutgers.
