Here’s are a few links and notes on local schools St. John’s, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Iona and Fordham with tomorrow’s tipoffs looming…
**I wrote a feature for SNY on Anthony Mason Jr. and his relationship with his “best friend,” his mother Monica Bryant. Check it out here.
**Rutgers sophomore guard Corey Chandler will be dressed and available to play in Friday night’s season opener against Marist at the RAC, according to sources close to the situation. It has yet to be decided whether he will actually play.
Chandler sat out an exhibition game Monday against Caldwell with “personal issues.”
New Jersey and New York are home to some of the top high school basketball programs in the nation. The Holy Trinity of St. Anthony, St. Patrick and St. Benedict’s in New Jersey routinely produces Division 1 players sought by elite programs from across the nation. A year ago, St. Anthony under Bob Hurley and St. Benedict’s under Dan Hurley, Bob’s son, finished 1-2 in most national prep polls and combined to send 9 players to the Division 1 ranks, including two to Rutgers, one to Pitt, one to Louisville and one to defending national champ Kansas.
Check out our interview with three of the top players in North Jersey who are signing in the early signing period: Tamir Jackson of St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, who is headed to Rice; Lance Brown out of Paterson Catholic, who committed to Fordham; and Karon Abraham of Paterson Eastside, who will play at Robert Morris.
Two wing players named Dwight from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, the No. 1 junior college in the nation, both signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.
St. John’s has received a commitment from Dwight Hardy (pictured), a 6-foot-2 shooting guard out of The Bronx.
“He signed with them today, yes, he did,” Indian Hills coach Jeff Kidder said. “St John’s placed him into our program two years ago but that’s where Dwight wanted to go all along.”
The NCAA early signing period will come and go without a single player from Oak Hill Academy signing.
Head coach Steve Smith said Wednesday that he doesn’t expect 6-foot guard Lamont “Momo” Jones of New York City or 6-9 forward Keith “Tiny” Gallon to sign early.
“No, neither of them is signing,” Smith said. “I don’t think either one of them is going to sign early. It’s possible but unlikely now.”
