Devendorf Suspended, Flynn Injured

The Syracuse University Appeals Board ruled that Eric Devendorf has been immediately suspended from the university and is prohibited from participating in all university activities.

Devendorf reportedly punched a female student in the face Nov. 1 and faced arrest last month. He is the Orange’s second-leading scorer at 13.9 points per game.

The Appeal Board modified the sanctions set by the University Judicial Board and imposed a community service requirement that he must meet in order to return to school for the spring semester. Jeff Goodman is reporting that Devendorf could be readmitted prior to the start of classes Jan. 12 and could potentially return in time to face Seton Hall Dec. 30 at home.

“Eric clearly made a mistake and should be punished. It is his responsibility to fulfill the requirements of this decision,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.

Added Devendorf: “I’m disappointed that I put myself in this position which resulted in being suspended as a student and unable to participate in a number of games, including tomorrow’s game [against No. 23 Memphis]. I understand the decision and will be complying with all of the requirements of it.”

It remains unclear when, or if, Devendorf will return to the Orange.

FLYNN A GAME-TIME DECISION

Guard Jonny Flynn did not practice on Friday after injuring his right hip in Syracuse’s win over Canisius on Wednesday.

Instead of practicing, Flynn received treatment on his hip, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. Flynn, a sophomore point guard, is Syracuse’s leading scorer.

Boeheim said Flynn’s playing status would be a game-time decision.
