Duke is the latest high-profile school to get involved with 2015 Roselle (N.J.) Catholic wing Malachi Richardson.
Duke assistant Chris Collins spoke Wednesday with RC head coach Dave Boff.
“They are very excited to start recruiting him and said that they recruit a select few kids that fit what they are looking for both on and off the court and they think he is that type of a person and player,” Boff, who also coaches Syracuse-bound forward Tyler Roberson, told SNY.tv.
“They are impressed with him on the court but also impressed with what he does academically at a school like Roselle Catholic that stresses academics.
“They believe Malachi is the type of player that can fit in with what they like to do. He shoots it great, is a great passer and very unselfish — all qualities that Coach Collins said are stressed at Duke.
“During my conversation with Coach Collins he also brought up [freshman] Asante Gist referencing Asante’s play at USA Basketball this aall, a camp which Malachi attended and also played very well at.
“With Coach K’s relationship with USA Basketball, it seemed to me that Coach Collins was impressed that we had players that had been recognized by that organization and had also performed well at the camp.”
The 6-foot-6 Richardson also holds offers from Ohio State, Indiana, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Miami and James Madison, with interest from North Carolina, Syracuse and others.
