EDITOR’S NOTE: This post was updated to reflect the NCAA rule that unofficial visits are not permitted during the month of July.
Tom Lyles called accusations that his son visited Kentucky in July “ridiculous,” “retarded” and “dumb” and said he and Trey visited the Kentucky campus for the first time a week ago.
Lyles was responding to comments made by Dan Dakich of 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis indicating that Trey, a 6-foot-8 power forward, visited Kentucky in July prior to his de-commitment from Indiana.
“I got it from a source, a very good source, that they went to Kentucky,” Dakich told SNY.tv by phone, adding that he had no proof of the visit other than what his source told him.
“And they told me July. Now, was it Aug. 1? I have no idea. They told me July. Nobody told me anybody met with coaches. Nobody told me any of that, just said they went to Kentucky in July.”
Unofficial visits are not permitted at all during the month of July, according to NCAA rule 13.7.1.1. A recruit can make an unofficial in July the day after he has accepted a scholarship offer or an offer of financial aid.
It Lyles did in fact visit during July and meet with coaches, it would have been an NCAA violation, per NCAA rules. Two Division 1 coaches said Kentucky would then likely have to stop recruiting him.
“It is ridiculous, it is flat out ridiculous that Dakich or anybody else out there would want to start up these untrue rumor simply because a kid decided that he wanted to be recruited, that he wanted to experience what it’s like to be recruited and now people are upset so they want to start spreading lies,” Tom Lyles told SNY.tv by phone.
“I don’t know where Dan is geting his information. I don’t know why Dan would want to put something like that out there.”
“It’s retarded. It never, ever happened because if anybody knows me they know there’s no way in the world I would do anything to jeopardize my son’s future, and that right there would be a blatant action in jeopardizing his future. Anybody who knows me knows that that would never happen.”
He added: “It’s dumb, it’s flat out dumb.”
To reiterate, Dakich said he had no idea that the visit may have been during a dead period when he made the comments.
“To be honest with you, and I should know this since I have a son that’s being recruited a little bit, but I didn’t even think about it being a violation,” Dakich said. “I just wanted to tell Indiana fans that this family and this kid have moved on and they’re being recruited. That was the purpose of me talking about it because Indiana fans are passionate and the kid’s from Indianapolis and he decommitted.”
Tom said he and his son did visit Kentucky a week ago Saturday.
“We were there just shy of a week ago,” he said. “He’s only taken two visits since he decided to open up his recruitment. The first one was a week ago today to Butler University here in Indianapolis.
“The second one was on Saturday, we went to Kentucky. That was the first time and the only time we were on the campus. We met with the coaches. That was the first time seeing Coach [John] Calipari up close. That was my first time ever meeting him, talking with him, or anybody else on his staff.”
Lyles said his son simply wants to go through the recruiting process after committing to Indiana early.
“We’re trying to get him to get this experience because you only go through it once in life,” he said. “For him he missed out on two years. He missed out on two years of being recruited because of his focus being on IU.
“He was excited to get there and to play.”
Numerous coaches have been in to visit Lyles since the contact period began and several visits are in the planning stages.
“We’re trying to get something scheduled,” he said, “for Michigan State, Louisville, Florida and a few other places.”

Zag, no matter what happens with this situation, thanks for actually calling Dakich and Lyles and getting their sides of the story and referencing the actual NCAA rules that may or may not have been broken instead of throwing out rumors like some have already done.

Gascan, no matter what happens I want you to know Calipari is dirty…

“Ridiculous”, “Retarded”, and “Dumb”?
I thought this article was talking about Zona and its jealous fans Bj and Jessica.

Remember when Tommy Crean visited Gary Harris in a dead period?
Man those were some good times!!
/
SiJessieWildcat / September 14, 2012
Dakich must have a good source.
Right AZ.
And we know that kensucky is dirty.
Another recruiting violation, not self-reported.
I hear UNC is hiring again.
Another cash pay out to a recruit through its parent(s). Sex included.
Note-
I must of missed the duke diamond scandal …cheaters
And the numerous UNC violations.
How much was Harrison paid to come back another year.

Folks, if you are so worried about cheating just do yourself a favor and stop watching college basketball.
Your rants about cheating are really just a reflection of your loser mindset.
Calipari gets the best talent because he develops top talents an Kentucky has the resources and power for maximum exposure!
The sooner you can admit that the better.
Why would a top talent rather play at Zona than Kentucky?

i’d like to personally thank IU and IU fans for pissing off Lyles and his family and basically steering trey towards UK. not that cal needs your help but thanks anyways.

If there was a UK embassy in Indiana, the Hoosier faithful would be rioting outside it right now. Talk about misplaced and misguided anger. I hope Cleric Dakich is happy.

this bj clown is an ass….you think the only cheaters are KU, UNC, Duke and UK, all teams that have won a title since ‘Zona won there last…lay down the pipe bj, your envy is quite obvious….They all bend the rules or cheat in someway…..if you think ‘Zona is pefectly clean then I’ve got some beach front property with mountain views up here in Colorado….now go ahead and tell me how “gangster U” and “calimari” are going to fail and that Self is slippin since he got to the Championship game with no 5 stars and that’s what you need to get there….By the way bj, who do you play in the CHAMPIONS CLASSIC this year?

dballard125 / September 14, 2012
LMAO at kids going to UK because Calipari “develops talent”. With the help of William Wesley, he gets the best recruits in the country to attend UK for 6 MONTHS. How much “developing” is anyone doing in 6 MONTHS? The John Wall’s, Anthony Davis’, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s, DeMarcus Cousin’s of the world would have been drafted in the lottery straight out of high school. Calipari didn’t develop sh*t. Those kids could have played at Long Beach State or Tulane and still be lottery picks. John Calipari and The University of Kentucky had nothing to do with it. Big Blue Nation should be worshipping one person, and one person only…and his name isn’t John Calipari. It’s William Wesley, because without him, UK would be playing in NIT’s like they were towards the end of Tubby Smith’s tenure, and when BCG was there. The UK brand has nothing to do with the talent they have gotten over the last 3 years, and winning #8. It has everything to do with WWW, and only WWW. Just be sure to hang that #8 banner in velcro, Big Blew Nation. Freakin’ delusional idiots.

Dballard125 needs to explain how UNC and Duke get their top talents? Is it www?
Somehow the greatest tradition in college basketball with the hottest coach in the land must cheat to get top talent! Lololol
Kentucky basketball has been great throughout history without Calipari so explain that.
Two bad hires with tubbyband Billy G hurt us but we finally got it right.
The 2012 NC banner is never coming down, nor is our other 7 titles, sorry…..

Dballard makes good points. theres always two sides to a story and it seems like Calipari is cheating in the eyes of everyone besides UK fans. Were not hating on Cal or UK its just in his past and will always haunt him. Hes also drew ridiculous talent to fucking memphis and now its even more talented at UK, which usually gets top talent but nothing like Calipari’s recruits

Wow, he actually called the comment “retarded”? What is he, 12? Did he call the accusations “gay” as well?

SiJessieWildcat / September 15, 2012
Down boys. Who woke up thos Kansas Gangster U folks.
Got tickets to sell.
But, I am not buying that he did not know it was a violation. (the reporter).
Surely he knew and the intent was to confirm that kentucky has a recruiting violation.
Did the kensucky fans read the sun times.
A.Davis FAM took cash. Just ask the Cuse fans.
WWW bought him to kensuky. Right.
And know we know how UNC brought back all of its players, for another year.
The paid them to come back…The moms just got a bonus sexual clause. Cherry on top, per say.

I guess duke lance thomas did not get 100k in diamonds.
That 30k was an easy down payment.
We are waiting for the rat to step forward and provide the inside details.
And they are coming out.

dballard125, when were all of those NITs that UK went to during Tubby’s tenure? (hint: there weren’t any)
Kentucky has been to one NIT in recent history and that was during Gillispie’s 2nd and final year.
Not surprised you got those facts wrong considering just about everything else you posted was false, too.

KingCal8 / September 16, 2012
Ok SIJessie, I will play the cheating game. Now, How did Zona get all those great recruits like Jefferson, Bibby, Terry,Fox, Gardener etc.. They must have cheated right?
I mean, to end up at Zona of all places?? Why Zona?
Who is Zona’s WWW?
Now stop looking desperate and retarded and stick to what happens on the court. Don’t wish it was easier, wish YOU were better!
