Serena, Murray Win After Being Impacted By Roddick’s Last Match

NEW YORK — Andy Roddick’s final tennis match had an emotional impact on Serena Williams and a logistical impact on Andy Murray.

Still, both players persevered in the wake of the dramatic events of the day to advance into the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

“It wasn’t easy, to be honest,” No. 4 Williams said after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 12 Ana Ivanovic in the night session that followed Roddick’s four-set, career-ending loss to Juan Martin Del Potro during the day. “I was out here watching his game and rooting so hard for Andy, as I’m sure everyone here was.

“I love Andy so much, he’s such a good friend. I’ve know him since I was 8 years old and that’s a long time. We’ll continue to be friends and what a great career he’s had.”
