The Knicks appear to have filled the last major hole on their roster.
In an effort to find another shooting guard to back up probable starter J.R. Smith, the Knicks have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with six-year veteran Ronnie Brewer, who most recently played with the Chicago Bulls in 2010-11 and 2011-12. The Bulls opted not to pick up Brewer’s $4.37 million team option for next season, making him a free agent.
The news was first reported by NBA.com’s David Aldridge, while Brewer also tweeted, “New York Knicks lets get it!!!”
The deal is not yet official, but is expected to be announced in the next day or two.
In Brewer, the Knicks are getting an athletic, 6-foot-7 guard that is also a proven defender, something Smith has not been at times. For his career, Brewer is averaging 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
The Knicks had been active in the free agent market looking for a shooting guard with names like Randy Foye, Carlos Delfino and Matt Carroll making it to this point without securing work for next season. Foye reportedly signed with the Utah Jazz on Monday evening for one year and $2.5 million.
