Providence Guard Kris Dunn To Have MRI on Shoulder

Providence freshman point guard Kris Dunn will have an MRI on his shoulder this week to determine if he needs surgery that could keep him out for an extended period.

“He’s going to have an MRI on Thursday and will be evaluated after the MRI and we’ll see where it is from there,” Friars coach Ed Cooley told SNY.tv Monday.

“He really hurt his shoulder when he was out with the USA [U18] tryouts. He’s in good spirits. Until we see what’s up with this MRI there’s really nothing to talk about.”

The Providence Journal first reported that Dunn re-aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury while training with the U.S. U18 team in Colorado Springs, Colo. The paper reported that Dunn, a McDonald’s All-American, could potentially miss the 2012-13 season.

Reiterating comments he made to other outlets, Cooley said that he believed incoming wing Ricky Ledo would succesffully pass through the NCAA Clearinghouse and become eligible.

“We’re still waiting on the Clearinghouse,” he said. “We should know pretty soon on that. I think we’re going to be fine. One thing with me, I don’t panic at all.”

Cooley said there was “no credibility” to a report that former Rhode Island guard Billy Baron was going to visit Providence. Baron is currently visiting Purdue and American, Canisius, Penn State and Western Kentucky have all requested a release on him. His father, Jim, is the new coach at Canisius.
