Cheek to Visit Pitt; Memphis Eliminated

Dominic Cheek’s list just shrunk to four.

With the decision by Xavier Henry to commit to Memphis on Tuesday morning, Cheek has effectively ruled Memphis out and will now choose from among Kansas, Villanova, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.

“Memphis will probably be eliminated and the other schools will probably be a stronger factor,” St. Anthony associate head coach Ben Gamble said Wednesday by phone.

Henry, the No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2009, announced on ESPN yesterday that he would join his brother C.J. Henry at Memphis instead of playing for reigning national champ Kansas.

Cheek had visited both of those schools, with the Memphis trip taking place last week.

“From talks that we had I don’t think he wants to be at the same place as a kid that’s rated higher than he is [who is] playing the same position,” Gamble said.

Cheek, a senior wing from Jersey City, has visited Kansas, Villanova and Memphis and will visit Rutgers this coming weekend and Pittsburgh beginning Tuesday. Rutgers plays Robert Morris Friday night in the Garden State Challenge.

“Dom’s going to go visit Pitt the 25th and come back Thanksgiving morning,” Gamble said.

He is still projected to commit in the spring, but Gamble said a decision could come at any time.
