Sam Cassell Jr. to Maryland

Sam Cassell Jr. is the newest member of Maryland’s strong 2012 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-2 son of the former NBA sharpshooter pulled the trigger for the Terps while home on break, choosing them over South Florida, Florida State, Villanova, UConn and Virginia Tech.

“I’m tremendously happy that Sam’s hard work is being rewarded with an opportunity to play basketball in the ACC,” Notre Dame Prep coach Ryan Hurd told SNY.tv.

“He’s taken his recruitment seriously, did his homework on everyone that showed interest and made a decision that he feels great about. He’s shown a ton of maturity through the process and I think he’s going to be great at the University of Maryland.”

Cassell Jr., who recently went for 40 points in a game against Winchendon, joins a strong class that includes small forward Jake Layman, shooting guard Seth Allen and centers Shaq Cleare, Damonte Dodd and Charles Mitchell.

The Terps remain in strong position with 2013 star guards Aaron and Andrew Harrison.
