Hurley: ‘Craziest Ending I’ve Ever Seen’

There have been some wild game-winning shots down through the history of college basketball.

But watch this video of Wagner’s Kenny Ortiz last-second buzzer-beater from the left corner going off the top of the backboard and then through the net and decide if you’ve ever seen anything like this.

Wagner coach Dan Hurley, who’s seen a few things in his basketball days, never had.

“It was the craziest ending to a game that I’ve ever seen,” Hurley told SNY.tv after his Seahawks stunned Santa Clara, 64-62, in the Championship Game of the 45th annual Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, Cal.

“Kenny is a winner. He has made that shot at Branchbrook Park in Newark a thousand times.”

Ortiz’s shot set off a wild celebration and capped a 12-rebound, eight-point, four-assist performance that earned him the Most Inspirational Player award.

Sophomore Latif Rivers was named Tournament MVP after averaging 19 points. Joining Rivers on the All-Tournament team was junior Jonathon Williams, who averaged 11 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Wagner won its first in-season tournament title since the 1997 Pepsi Marist Classic, capping a school-record 9-2 mark in non-conference play.

“We are excited to win a championship in a hostile environment against a quality program like Santa Clara,” Hurley said.

Hurleys team is now 10-3 while recording double-figures in victories before the end of the calender year for the first time in school history.

The Seahawks have beaten teams from the Big East, West Coast Conference, Mountain West, Colonial, Ivy, Patriot and MEAC.

“We are a good road team because we defend and play hard,” Hurley said.

  • I like the homer announcer yelling, “No!!! It’s No Good!!!” as if he’s in his living room watching the game. What a hack!

  • Yes! in two variations both by the Harlem Globetrotters. LOL One the inbounds pass was over the backboard and an OOP, the other was over the backboard shot!
but in real game this may not take the cake but it sure gets to lick the icing off the bowl to say the very least. amazing.
and yes the announcer did have a bit of trouble maintaining his professional standards on the call. LOL
