Jarvis to Florida Atlantic

Mike_jarvis_courtesy_espnFormer St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis will be introduced today as the new head coach at Florida Atlantic.

Jarvis’ four-year contract must be approved Wednesday by university trustees, according to the AP.

Jarvis replaces Rex Walters, who announced on April 14 that he was leaving after two seasons for San Francisco, causing R.J. Hall of Bloomfield Tech to de-commit and end up at Marist.

Jarvis, who lives in Boca Raton and also coached at Boston University and George Washington, has a 364-201 career record.  He won 100 or more games at all three schools and took all three to the NCAA tournament.

During his tenure at St. John’s, Jarvis took the Red Storm to the Big Dance three times (’99, ’00 and ’02( and also won the NIT title in 2003. Jarvis was let go the following season in the wake of a scandal in which Abe Keita said that a St. John’s staff member had given him $300 on a monthly basis over four years. St. John’s put itself on probation and forfeited the games in which Keita played. Those included the 2002 NCAA first-round loss and the NIT title game.
