Jarnell Stokes is leaning toward enrolling in college in January, but nothing is definite, according to his father.
“We think so,” Willie Stokes told SNY.tv Wednesday by phone. “We’re really not sure. We’ve got to make sure we got everything lined up first.”
Earlier this month, Jarnell told the Memphis Commercial Appeal: “I’ve set myself up to go to college midyear. I really don’t know yet, but that’s definitely an option.”
The 6-foot-9 Stokes is considering Kentucky, UConn, Memphis, Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee, with one source close to the recruitment saying he believes Stokes will land at Tennessee.
“I talk to my dad about that every day. I’m just waiting on an answer from God,” Stokes told the Appeal. “I wish I could just choose right now and get it all out the way, but I don’t think I’m ready to make a decision right now. Maybe I will be next week, but I can’t give you a timetable right now.”
Kentucky and Memphis both reportedly don’t have mid-year scholarships available, and neither does UConn.
Still, Stokes could walk-on to one of those programs or potentially obtain an academic scholarship.
Stokes transferred to Memphis Southwind from Central High last summer, but was ruled athletically ineligible at Southwind by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association because of transfer rules.
His hardship appeal to the TSSAA Board of Control was denied last month, making him ineligible to play his senior season at Southwind.
