Derrick Favors could decide on a school “any day now,” according to Hulio Smith, one of Favors’ AAU coaches with the Atlanta Celtics.
“Looks like he may go in the early period now,” Smith wrote in a text message Tuesday morning. “Hopefully any day now. Everyone will find out at the same time as he will do it live on ESPNU.”
The 6-foot-9, 270-pound Favors out of South Atlanta High is the No. 1 center in the Class of 2009. He will choose from among Georgia, Georgia Tech and N.C. State, Smith said.
Memphis and Florida State are apparently no longer in the mix. Favors had planned to visit Memphis but that visit did not take place.
In-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech have long been the favorites to obtain Favors, but he and John Wall, the top recruit in the Class of ‘09, both recently visited N.C. State.
Favors initially said he may wait to commit until during the season, but his coach wants him to choose a school by the early signing period this month.
“It just depends on how comfortable he feels after….the visits,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “I would prefer he would get it done by the signing date in November. That’s what’s preferable.
“It would take away a little more of the distraction and speculation. He would have that over with.”

This coach is totally out of line by telling this kid to commit now. Considering how coaches leave at the end of the season, players leave for the draft, and the NCAA makes it difficult to change once you sign the Letter of Intent.

Yes, but tons of kids all over the country will commit and sign in November, Dexter Strickland, Ryan Kelly, etc. etc.
A few may wait, perhaps Cheek, Lance, etc.
And then once the coaching changes occur in the spring, you’ll have a round of decommits and musical chairs. Happens every year.
By signing now, a kid can focus on his senior year and not worry about recruiting and phonecalls for a year.

This isn’t the right article to write on so sorry in advance. However, will SHU ever get a ’09 commit? We are the only BE team without a commitment for ’09 and maybe Theodore will be a top flight player maybe not, but our ’08 class has crumbled as well. The recruiting aspect of this program is absolutely horrible right now. It worries me a little because it really thwarts any positive momentum we can muster. Look what good/very good recruiting classes have done for Rutgers. I’m not sure they could have beat “Jerry’s Kids” last year in a game, however no one talks about that it’s all about how good the program is looking. I am not a Gonzo detractor and believe he needs his shot still, but it also looks like we only do not have any commits for ’09 but we don’t even have any prospects left to sign, and all this comes after we have basically an 8 man team. This should be the biggest class we have had. Bobby really needs to start winning some serious games, or he needs to start winning some serious recruiting battles. I also don’t mean Cheek or any of that nonsense. We would have never got him in a million years. I’m talking about getting numerous of those good level local guys. The whole situation does not instill any type of confidence. It also shows how this BE is a joke and a disgrace. It is not built for the basketball centered private schools anymore. This is a completely different topic for a different day, but one of my biggest pet peeves. Some of the schools in this conference are an absolute disgrace. Sorry for the extremely long post. Give us some good recruiting news Adam. Please (ha a lot of pressure).
