Iona Lands JUCO Point Guard

DaShawn Gomez, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound point guard from Antelope (Calif.) Valley College, has pledged to Iona and will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2012.

“I just feel that it’s the perfect spot to play the perfect style that fits my game,” Gomez, 20, told SNY.tv by phone.

“I have a lot of family out there, too, on the East Coast. It’s the best thing for me.”

Gomez, originally from Englewood, Calif., also held an offer from Utah State. He spent a semester at New Mexico State, but got a medical release because of an eye injury and has been at Antelope for a year.

A first team All-Foothill Conference player last season, Gomez averaged 9.1 points and led the team in assists (127).

“I’m a great passer,” he said. “My goal is just to lead the nation in assists and just knock down open shots.”
