Freddy Asprilla is headed to Canisius.
The former Kansas State big man committed during an unofficial visit to the Buffalo, N.Y., school Friday and will have one year of eligibility remaining beginning in the fall of 2012.
“Freddy Asprilla has decided to transfer to Canisius from Kansas State instead of turning pro as anticipated,” said Art Alvarez of the Miami Tropics, a mentor to Asprilla.
“Freddy’s family wants him to finish school and graduate. He has verbally committed to coach Tom Parrotta on an unofficial today [Friday].”
Asprilla started 13 games and averaged 4.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in his first season with the Wildcats. He had transferred from Florida International.
Kansas State coach Frank Martin called it a “mutual decision” and initially said he expected Asprilla to “explore professional playing opportunities in his home country.”
He is a native of Villavicencio, Colombia.
