Jamal Ferguson to Marquette

Jamal Ferguson, the No. 14 shooting guard in the Class of 2012 according to Rivals, has verbally pledged to Marquette.

“Marquette and Georgetown, those were his two options,” said Jermaine Woods, the assistant coach at Norfolk (Va.) Maury High where Ferguson plays.

“He went there on an unofficial. He was surprised that the area was more city-like.”

The 6-foot-4 Ferguson is averaging 17 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block, while leading his team in field goal percentage.

“I think he’s going to be a better college player,” Woods said. “His potential is great. He has broad shoulders and a good build.

“He’s a great slasher, great rebounder and an excellent defender.”

“I’m proud of the work he’s putting in. He’s glad [the recruitment] is going to be out of the way. It was bearing on him a little bit.”

Woods credited Marquette assistant Aki Collins with doing a great job of recruiting Ferguson.

“Coach Collins did a superb job of recruiting him, communicating with his mom, myself and Jamal,” Woods said. “They showed their face at every game. They had a representative at every game.”

Ferguson is Marquette’s first 2012 commitment.
