South Kent’s Ledo Turning Heads

SOUTH KENT, Conn. — On a roster stocked with four Big East-bound seniors, the most talented prospect is an uncommitted junior.

Ricardo Ledo is a 6-foot-6, 180-pound shooting guard at South Kent (Conn.) ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2011 by Rivals. He originally hails from Providence, R.I

Kentucky assistant Orlando Antigua was the latest high-major coach to stop by the remote school for a workout Thursday afternoon.

Coaches from Duke, UCLA, Kansas, West Virginia, Syracuse, Pitt and Louisville have also been in.

‘[His recruitment] is at the highest level,” Todd Quarles, Ledo’s AAU coach with Expressions Elite, said by phone.

“I think offensively, he’s the most talented person in the country in his class and as he gets stronger and learns to play with more intensity I just think the sky’s the limit for him.

“He can create his own shot. He has pro size at 6-6. He has length . He has athleticism. As he gets stronger and gets more experience, the sky’s the limit for him.”

Quarles did not want Ledo speaking with the media, but South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson sees Ledo every day and echoed Quarles’ comments.

“Ricky is really good,” Jefferson said. “He is a talented player. He can really score. He can shoot the ball. He has NBA range. He can create offense off the dribble. He could be a really good defender when he wants to be.

“He’s just a pure scorer. He just knows how to score. He can put the ball in the basket, has a knack for it.”

The South Kent roster also includes Rutgers-bound big men Kadeem Jack and Derrick Randall, St. John’s commit Maurice Harkless and Cincinnati bound guard Ge-lawn Guyn.

With all those players committed, Randall said he knows all the big-time coaches are coming in to see Ledo.

“Yeah, probably for Ricky because he’s a scorer and he likes to shoot a lot,” Randall said. “He’s good, very good.”

“His recruitment is wide open,” Jefferson added. “He’s kind of just sitting back and seeing who’s interested in him. Duke’s been in. Kentucky, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Louisville.

“He wants to get through this year, see who’s serious and kind of narrow it down from there. But right now he’s just enjoying it.”
