Sanders Takes First Official to Cincinnati

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin and his staff know a thing or two about finding talent in the New York metropolitan area.

Rashad Bishop, who starred at Paterson (N.J.) Kennedy and St. Benedict’s Prep, is a senior. Lance Stephenson was a one-and-done with the Bearcats. And Cronin expects big things this year from redshirt freshman Sean Kilpatrick, a White Plains, N.Y. native.

“He can score 10 points falling out of bed,” Cronin said of Kilpatrick.

The Bearcats also recently got a commitment from Montclair, N.J. native Shaquille Thomas of NIA Prep, the nephew of NBA veteran Tim Thomas and the half-brother of New York Liberty star Essence Carson.

Now the Bearcats are zeroing in on two other local products: Rice senior wing Jermaine Sanders and New Jersey guard Elijah Carter.

After in-home visits with both players, Sanders opted to take his first official visit to Cincinnati this weekend with his mother.

“Cincinnati has done a great job recruiting Jermaine,” said Kimani Young of New Heights. “Jermaine has enjoyed his entire recruitment process but just wanted to get a closer look at Cincinnati right now as well as give his mom an opportunity to visit the school and gauge what Cincinnati has to offer them.”

The 6-foot-5 Sanders, who will contend for New York City and State Player of the Year honors, has no other officials planned, which further underscores how hard Cincinnati has worked.

The 6-2 Carter, now at Brewster (N.H.) Academy, will trip to Cincinnati next weekend after visiting Charlotte this weekend.

“I’m building a good relationship witt Coach Cronin and Coach [Darren] Savino,” he said recently. “They came in and let me know how everything was.”

Carter also lists Seton Hall, Clemson and Oregon State in his top five.
