Starbury to Attend Training Camp

Despite a report yesterday in Newsday that Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury would be waived by the end of this week, Knicks president Donnie Walsh says Starbury will be around for at least another week.

“He’s coming to training camp,” Walsh told The New York Times.

Newsday cited anonymous sources to report that the Knicks would try to negotiate a buyout of the final year of Marbury’s contract. He is due $21.9 million this season.

Marbury, a native of Coney Island, N.Y., the same area that produced his cousin Sebastian Telfair and current Lincoln High School star Lance Stephenson, has been viewed by many as a cancerous influence on the Knicks. One veteran Knicks player told The Times that he had been assured that Marbury would be gone before the team’s media day, which is Monday. The Knicks signed Chris Duhon to a two-year, $12-million deal during the offseason, promising him he could compete with Marbury for the starting job.

The Knicks begin training camp at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Tuesday.

“He’s coming to camp,” Walsh told ESPN.com.
