Johnny Mac Says Serena’s ’09 Outburst Tops Him

Throughout his Hall of Fame tennis career, John McEnroe was known as the king of profane and colorful outbursts.

But even McEnroe says Serena Williams did him one better last year at the U.S. Open when she unleashed a profanity-laced tirade at a lineswoman for a controversial foot fault call that ended up costing Williams her semifinal match against eventual champion Kim Clijsters.

“It was an aberration for Serena,” McEnroe said Wednesday on a conference call in advance of the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 30. “I’ve never seen her lose it like that. There’s no doubt that she lost it far worse than I’ve ever seen her lose it. I dare to say even worse than I’ve ever lost it.
