Monmouth coach Dave Calloway landed a pair of players from the Jersey Shore Warriors program.
Andrew “Red” Nicholas, a 6-6, 210-pound wing who initially committed to former Rutgers coach Fred Hill, and Austin Tillotson, a 6-1 point guard, both committed for 2011. Both play at Eastern York (Pa.) High School.
“It’s at the beach,” Nicholas said by text. “I can play right away. They have small classes. Plus, Austin is going there. I love the arena.”
Nicholas chose Monmouth over Iona, Fordham, Vermont, Siena, Hofstra and others.
“He wanted to get a chance to play right away,” Warriors coach Tony Sagona said of Nicholas. “He’s a tremendous shooter, a lefty. He’s a three-man. He can definitely help them right away.”
Both players helped the Warriors go 57-7 on the summer circuit, winning five tournaments and reaching the finals of the U17 Nationals in Orlando.
Sagona said Tillotson, who also considered Bucknell, Citadel and Quinnipiac, is a “tremendous point guard.”
“He played some of the best guards straight up,” he said. “He’s quick, can shoot and plays great defense.”
