Drummond Close to Releasing List

Andre Drummond could release a college list in August and St. Thomas More coach Jere Quinn says UConn remains in good position with the 6-foot-11, 265-pound rising junior.

“I still think it’s just too early to tell,” Quinn, the head coach at St. Thomas More, said Friday by phone. “But he’s always liked Connecticut and he’s always liked Coach [Jim] Calhoun and he’s always liked the idea of staying close to home.”

Drummond, who was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. and raised in Middletown, Conn., recently told The Hartford Courant, “I’d rather stay pretty close to home.”

Still, Quinn added: “We’re hearing from the Kentuckys, the Carolinas. Everybody in the world wants to recruit the kid.”

Quinn said Drummond was not close to committing anywhere.

“I don’t know if he’s ready to make a commitment one way or another,” Quinn said.

Drummond is ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2012 by Rivals and is projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft in some quarters.

During an interview last month during training with the USA U17 team, with which he won a gold medal in Hamburg, Germany, Drummond said he planned to release a college list in August.

“After Nationals in Florida I’ll let out a list of schools that I’m interested in. There’s no Top 5,” Drummond said in late June.

UConn coaches are not permitted to comment publicly on recruits, but one person close to the staff said, “There’s a pretty good player in our own state” we would like to get.
