Calhoun Picks Up 3 Major Offers

Omar Calhoun picked up three major offers on Tuesday, the first day college coaches could call 2012 players.

Calhoun, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard from Christ the King, earned offers from Florida, Arizona and Rutgers.

“We had a tremendous day [Tuesday],” Omar Calhoun Sr. said. “We had quite a few calls and Coach Billy Donovan called us and offered Omar personally. We thought that was very important and exciting. We had picked up an offer from Billy Donovan himself.”

Calhoun Sr. said Rutgers assistant Van Macon and Arizona assistant Book Richardson also called to offer.

Calhoun, who plays AAU ball with the New York Gauchos, previously held offers from Villanova, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville and Miami, his father said.

Numerous other schools called Tuesday but have yet to offer, including North Carolina, Providence, Virginia Tech, Miami, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Georgetown.

“We don’t have any favorites right now. We’re just wide open,” Omar Sr. said. “We’re just waiting to cut it down after the live period.”

He said Calhoun does plan on visiting Florida in early August for its Elite Camp.

“We anticipate going out to the Florida Elite Camp after the Nationals,” the father said.

Former Baylor shooting guard Givon Crump just returned from an official visit to Fresno State. “The visit was good. The staff there has shown great interest in me being a major contributor on the team,” Crump said. “I’m not sure what the next move is. I need to talk with my family. I want to made a decision in the near future.” Crump also visited Rutgers and Seton Hall…Villanova announced some shakeups on its staff. Doug West has left to pursue a “business opportunity” and will be replaced by Keith Urgo, the former Director of Basketball Ops. Baker Dunleavy, a former Villanova player and SNY analyst, will become the DOBO.
