Michael Gilchrist Headed to the Bluegrass

Less than two hours after landing the No. 1 player in the Class of 2010, Kentucky coach John Calipari got the top player in the Class of 2011.

With senior point guard Brandon Knight already having chosen Kentucky on Wednesday, junior wing Michael Gilchrist said he will follow him to the Bluegrass State.

“I’ll be going to the University of Kentucky. I like Coach Cal a lot, his staff and I like the fans there a lot. This is a blessing,” the 6-foot-7 Gilchrist told ESPNU.

A junior at Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick considered the top high school player in the nation regardless of class, Gilchrist said Oregon and Villanova were his other two finalists.

  • A great day for UK! The cornerstones for the next two classes are set. Let’s hope they attract other top players to UK.

Bruce Perl’s comments on the show were interesting.. thought he was sending a message to Selby. I really hope Bill Self does not pull a Northern Iowa and miss out on Selby.. I would not want UK to face Selby/Harris 2-3 times next year.

Now to Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and CJ Leslie.. I’d say the odds of UK signing one of them is 100%, two of them is 75% and three of them is 25%.

Also hope Teague makes up his mind this week.. let’s get it on!

  • the biggest news of the day was gilchrist in my opinion. Knight was almost a foregone conclusion.
Im also interested to see how Mccallum does in the horizon league with detroit. he should be one of the best players in the league next year.

Hopefully Saturday, KU will get some good news from Josh selby!

  • Really. What a shocker. Does World Wide We$ have any friends who are just ordinary folk? it seems all his “very close family friends” are — or one time were — high level basketball recruits. funny coincidence isnt it?

  • I believe Lamb will be the next to commit to UK,at least that is what I’m hearing…We shall see…

  • Why wouldnt you want to see Selby/Harris 2-3 times a year chicagocat? You scared of some healthy competition?

  • Man, I’m jealous.

New Jersey doesn’t have enough money to buy out a coach.

But Kentucky has enough cash to buy the best high school senior AND high school junior on one day?

Wow, I’m impressed. I’m sure the two kids will be poster boys for the NCAA definition of a wonderful student-athletes in the mold of Cousins and Jon Wall.

  • Ya no shit, he grew up with all the top players parents in like 6 states right.

  • Congrats to kentucky fans very nice pickups.

  • Brandon is far from best player in senior class but top 5 for sure.

  • Brandon Knight has a 4.2 GPA and has all A’s for all of his twelve years of schooling.

Good call on Wall too, he had a 3.4 GPA last semester. If you saw any UK games they mentioned it 400 times a game on TV.

    You are a dolt.

  • Nope, not scared… we have been killing TN for a hundred years.. it’ll just be easier without Selby.

Besides Selby deserves better than TN :-p

So what are the Zona fans thinking tonight? I think McCallum would have done very well there..

  • Zona fans pretty much knew McCallum, Lamb, and Selby wouldnt commit. We have our eyes on Kadeem Jack. I think that a class of Jack, Perry, Mayes, and Bejarno is very good. I have faith in Sean Miller. He’s got commitments from 8 solid players, (9 pending Jack), in a little over a year. And the best part about all of this, is that these kids will be around and grow together. Miller in putting a masterpiece together here in Tucson.

  • Most Zona fans new where Ray was going, and othrs were holding out help. They will be a lot better next year, but I still believe we needed that top Pg to reach the top 15 or so next year because im not sold just yet on momo jones like most Zona fans are. Derrick Williams will contend if not win Pac 10 player of the year, and Solomon Hill will be much improved to go with MoMo and Parrom and Fogg. There current class is solid with Bejarano,Mayes, and Perry(1st team Juco all ameri can), and most believe kadeem jack has UofA as his favorite. They will be 10-12 deep and I think they will be in a 65 team tourney next year and should be picked 2nd in another down year in the Pac.By 2011-2012 they will be ready to make a deep run.

  • Interesting. That Jessie dude had me thinking Zona was banking on Shelby/McCallum/Lamb.

Wasn’t Momo going to UofL at some point?

I think Miller is a great coach too.

  • Tony Wroten named UK as his leader today. #9 in Rivals 2011 class. That means Cal got #1, #2 Teague is said to be a UK lean, as is #3 Quincy Miller. Throw in Wroten and its over.

  • yes, momo was comitted to lousville,VT,USC and finally Zona.lol

  • It’s hard to recruit against cal, UK, Lebron and WWW. Eventually he’s going to have enough talent to overcome his mistakes on the court….

  • Ya, and Derek Rose passed the SATs all by himself. Really. Just ask Coach Cal. What, the coach didn’t know anything about someone taking the test? Gee, what a surprise.

And John Wall didn’t make a qualifying test score until … May of his senior year in high school. And that was … hmm … after Cal went to UK and after Wall committed to Cal. Double hmm …

Look, John Wall is a great, make that GREAT young talent, and should be a star in the NBA, but please … enough with the academic sainthood. A kid who was reported by his HS coach to be 100 points short on his SATs until after he commits to UK and … then he miraculously puts it all together. Yeah, just like Derek Rose found Schoolbook Jesus when he showed up in Memphis.

A 3.4 in what and where? Your pitbull would be a merit scholar in Ruppville and could probably nail a 3.8 as a frosh.

  • Thank You! It is good to be hated on again. We are back where we belong, at or near the top. Go Cats!
