ZAGSBLOG first reported during the Final Four that St. John’s coach Steve Lavin would reach out to Oak Hill Academy guard Doron Lamb and now it has come to pass.
Calvin Lamb, Doron’s father, said Lavin called him shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday to express interest in Lamb, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard ranked among the top five nationally in the Class of 2010.
“IÂ just got off the phone with Coach Lavin like five minutes ago,” Calvin said.
“He just talked about the style of play that Doron could come in and start and be a floor general and be a good fit with the nine seniors that they have. He could be the one player that could get them over the hump to the NCAA tournament.”
Calvin said no meeting with Lavin had been set and that he had to huddle with Doron before making any future plans.
“I gotta talk to my son,” he said.
Lamb, a Queens, N.Y. native, originally said he would announce his college choice Saturday at the Jordan Brand Classic in New York and would choose from among Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, UConn and West Virginia.
Lavin now has a scholarshp to give after 6-7 St. Peter’s Prep forward Ronald Roberts was released from his Letter of Intent Tuesday. Roberts had been former coach Norm Roberts’ lone signee for 2010.
Kelly said Roberts would reconsider his options and that St. Joe’s was “certainly a school that showed a lot of love early on in the process.
“Coach [Phil] Martelli has gotten a number of guys into the pros and had some great teams so they’re definitely high on our list. But Ron hasn’t made any firm decisions yet.”
The NCAA is currently in a dead period which ends Friday, but sources said St. Joe’s was “trying to set a meeting [with Roberts] as soon as possible.”
Once a player signs with one Big East school he can never sign with another one, so Roberts cannot join another league program.

AZ,
It looks like the best decision for Doron is to wait it out?
With Knight going to Kentucky.
Kansass loosing out …on another top player.
And Eric B. very likely to return to college.
He is not ready and the GM has expressed reservations.
So, is it Best to Wait or does Book come into the picture.

Isn’t it quiet period right now? isn’t this a violation on Lavin’s part?

Adam Zagoria / April 13, 2010
No, absolutely not.
Definition: A “Dead Period,” as the name implies, is a time when nearly all recruiting activity is temporarily shut down.
During a dead period, coaches cannot:
Make in-person recruiting contacts
Conduct in-person evaluations — on or off-campus
Schedule official campus visits
Allow unofficial campus visits
Offer complimentary tickets to games
The only permissible communications during a dead period are phone calls (limited by NCAA regulations to one call per week) and correspondence.

Adam, off-topic, but any truth to the rumor that Gilchrist will announce tomorrow?

RockChalkWoody / April 13, 2010
Jessie, you left out Selby…on purpose. I know it sucks, but you’re getting none of the “Three Amigos.”

I feel good about UK’s chances with Lamb. The idea of him and Knight potentially playing together could be very enticing. I remember seeing him 3 years ago in an AAU tourney and thought how great it would be if he suited up for UK. Until Calipari came onboard, he was just a pipedream.

I am telling you guys, Lamb & Knight might be footnotes this week… Gilchrist will be the big news.
Wish someone with more credentials would back me up, LOL…

Cool, Gilchrist is announcing as my source told me a week ago.
Brandon Knight is #1 in 2010 (for now) and Gilchrist is #1 in 2011 on Rivals.com… and UK is going to get both on the same day. WOW.
P/S: Yes, I know Barnes will be the new #1…

I see this as a guess at this point, I agree Knight is Uk bound and I also think Selby is KU bound, the others I have no clue. I can see Lamb at UK or KU, rumor is that Lamb is tight with Selby so I could see that in KU’s favor which would send Ross to UK. I think Jones hinges on who Oregon hires, but UK is a big possibility, I see Leslie recommitting to NCSTATE. Well until its all said and done nobody knows, will we fun to see. Of course Im hoping for 1 if not 2 heading to KU. Found this article below to be pretty close to my thinking, got it off ESPNU today.
Kansas looks as if it has a great chance to contend with Kentucky for the top remaining players in the late signing period. The dominoes will start to fall as players start to commit. Some potential scenarios that could occur would be Knight to Kentucky, Selby to Kansas, Terrence Ross (Portland, Ore./Jefferson) to Kentucky, Doron Lamb (New York/Oak Hill) to Kansas, etc. If Cory Joseph joins teammate Tristan Thompson at Texas, it would give the Longhorns two top-25 players in much-needed positions. Also, if NC State can close the borders and keep C.J. Leslie (Holly Springs, N.C./Word of God) away from Kentucky, the Wolfpack’s class would be considered among the better ones in the nation.

Selby and Lamb are both going to Kentucky.

RockChalkWoody / April 13, 2010
Selby is not going to Kentucky.

Jayhawk_Jake / April 14, 2010
Cal can obviously recruit but people are getting rediculous thinking that every player has UK #1 on their list.

bball purist / April 14, 2010
Ross is going nowhere. He won’t qualify academically. That’s why he left MC. Leslie will go to State because of the connection – you’re right on that. I would love to see Lamb put SJU over the top – good times next year if that happens for the Johnnies…
