Hill, Melvin, Wroten Recruiting Updates

By ALEX KLINE & ADAM ZAGORIA

Chris Hill, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound shooting guard from Creedmoore (N.C.) Christian Faith Academy, is receiving interest from Memphis, Nebraska, USC and Kansas State, according to Christian Faith head coach Ro Russell.

Hill is a skilled forward but must sort out his academic situation before he can become qualified.

“Right now, he’s 6-7, 6-8. He can really shoot it. He can play the 3 or the 4. He’s a really skilled shooting combo forward,” Russell said. “He reminds me of Lazar Hayward of  Marquette.

“But he still has to get a lot of stuff done academically. Come May is when we’ll have a better picture of where his whole recruitment situation is.”

Hill lists Memphis as his leader, and Russell said Memphis was indeed recruiting him.

“Memphis is my leader,” Hill said Monday by phone.

“That’s where I want to go badly because of Penny Hardaway. Will Barton is my boy, too.”

Memphis has seven commits for next season and Hill is still waiting to see how the current roster shakes out. Williams may opt to leave for the NBA after his sophomore season, which would open up a spot for Hill to step in.

“I’m waiting for certain situations with the numbers,” Hill said.

MELVIN UPDATES LIST

Onetime UConn commit Cleveland Melvin lists Duke, Pittsburgh, Marquette, Miami, South Florida, Seton Hall, DePaul and TCU among the schools he could wind up playing for.

The 6-7 Melvin, out of Notre Dame Prep, wants to commit and sign with a team, “before the end of the signing period” in May.

He decommitted from UConn because he wants the “chance to play more out on the wing when I go to college.”

Melvin said Jim Calhoun’s health issues did not have an impact on his decommitment and that the Huskies were off his list despite Calhoun saying he will sign a four-year extension.

WROTEN ADDS BAYLOR

Seattle Garfield junior guard Tony Wroten has added Baylor to a list that includes UConn, Syracuse, Villanova and Washington.

“Yes,” he wrote by text.

Wroten continues to list UConn as his leader and says he wants to play with Kemba Walker, although Walker may well be gone after next season.

Wroten was asked on Twitter if he would commit to Washington if the Huskies won the NCAA title.

“I swear to God I would,” he said.

  • This is incorrect. From the friends I have close to the Memphis program, they say Memphis has backed off of this guy. Probably because he sounds like a headcase making the statements he has made.

  • Hopefully Cleveland Melvin commits to Seton Hall, with loss of Robert Mitchell playing time will be a major factor In why these kids would want to commit

  • I also hope Wroten lands In the Big East, I mean If other Pac-10 schools could dip into Washington’s backyard and grab recruits why cant the Big East…

  • is UK no longer recruiting Hill? maybe because of his academic issues?

  • I’m really happy Tony Wroten has UConn as his favorite school. Apparently he isn’t as worried about Calhoun leaving as Arizona fans are. I would love to get this kid

  • Wroten changes his list every ten minutes, but he has made it well known he will play at U Dub or somewhere in the big east. Nova, Cuse,or Uconn.
Anyone heard update on wroten ACL?

  • HuskiesNYC, it may not happen next year or the year after, but eventually UConn will have to deal the situation. That said, I believe UConn will be just fine long term.

Much depends on how the administration handles the situation. UofA’s admin did a pretty bad job in my opinion, although I was ultimately thrilled with Miller’s hiring.

  • You are so right! LOl all Arizona fans say Is Calhoun reminds them of Lute Olson so much, Its like the want Calhoun to retire so bad because all the recruits they are targeting are considering UConn as well as one or two more Big East schools. Where would I want to play, at a school with alot of prestige and a with a hall of fame coach In the best conference In the nation? I think so!

  • HallBall you are a douchebag and Nobody is scared of Uconn getting any recruits.Maybe Calhoun should step down now and save some embarrassment over another NIT bid next year.Because if Uconn couldnt get in this year with the talented seniors they had there is no way they will get in next year. And if Kemba was smart he would get off that sinking ship at Uconn fast. And lets not bring up there final four run last year because it is history now.
