Calhoun Back for Four More Years

UConn coach Jim Calhoun ended speculation about his future Thursday when he announced plans to sign a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2013-14 season.

Calhoun, 68, is expected to sign the deal within the next couple of weeks, ESPN.com reported.

“Let me officially put to rest the speculation about my future at UConn,” Calhoun said in a prepared statement from his agent Jeff Schwartz sent to ESPN.com. “We are close to finalizing a new contract and I plan on continuing as the head coach of the men’s basketball team for several more years.”

  • Atta boy Coach glad to have you back!! Corey Joseph, sign on the dotted line please.

  • Good news for Uconn and good luck to coach calhoun.

  • doron lamb join roscoe and sign here x__________

  • Corey Joseph = Villanova

  • Nova is pretty stacked at guard. UConn backcourt = wiiiide open.

  • Good news for UConn and the Big East and a shut the hell up to those Arizona a**holes who thought he was leaving.

  • Your right HallBall, I think all of us UofA fans owe you a huge appology. This clearly means that he will coach at least another 4 years!!!!

    Congrats!!!

  • I never said shit about him retiring because honestly he probably wont get to on his own terms. He is a ticking time bomb healthwise. The man has had cancer twice, has high blood pressure and past out riding a bike and broke his ribs. I love how you idiots think signing a four year contractt means he will coach for four years. But Im happy he’s back because like I stated before I am not a Uconn hater.

  • Blaney isnt Uconn’s coach in waiting is he husky fans?

  • no, just a confidant of calhouns. The consensus is Tom Moore, who is an ex-uconn assistant now a head coach at quinipiac. he is credited for recruiting many of the big name uconn players in the NBA.

  • Blaney is like 20 years older than Calhoun and will retire when JC decides to hang it up. He’s not even under consideration for the head coaching job and never has been. I would be very happy to give Tom Moore the head coach in waiting title. He’s the best recruiter UConn has ever had and wow he was 1 basket away from making the NCAA tourney at Quinipiac!

  • Tom Moore is who I had heard about just got confused. I know blaney is old too thats why I didnt think he was replacement, thanks for clarifying.

  • Lol, Lute Olson said he was returning and he had 4 more years on his contract.

    Just saying…

I don’t care if the man has 20 years on his contract, if his health can’t hold up he’ll have to retire. I hope for your sake he can finish out his contract and ride off into the sunset and all is well.

  • ^^^THIS^^^

Just because he signed a 4 year extension he is guaranteed to be around another 4 years? lol ok. Lute had several years left on his contract but his heath kept him from finishing it.

I hope Calhoun does get to retire on his own terms, but based on the last 2 years the odds are very slim. Last I checked, you don’t get healthier as you age.

  • I think Calhoun will do what Lute tried to do; get his successor under his wing in his last couple years of coaching so the torch is passed more smoothly.

Arizona just wasn’t prepared for Lute’s departure. As long as the Huskie program realizes that Calhoun won’t be around forever and starts putting in a plan now, they will be fine.
