Virginia Loses to McGill; Taylor, Thomas Lead KU

Moustafa El Zanaty scored a game-high 30 points to lead McGill University to an 88-83 victory over Virginia in an exhibition game on Sunday.

It was the final game of a three-game weekend exhibition trip to Canada for the Cavaliers. UVa defeated St. Lawrence College (107-60) and Concordia University (85-70) in exhibition games on Saturday (Aug. 30). McGill lost to Kansas 72-67 in a Saturday exhibition game.

Virginia led 80-75 with 3:02 left in Sunday’s game with McGill before the Redmen outscored the Cavaliers 13-3 the rest of the way. McGill took the lead for good at 81-80 with 1:06 left on two free throws by El Zanaty. He scored eight points in the final McGill run and went 6-6 from the free throw line in the last 1:06 of the game.

Elsewhere, N.C. State routed Guelph, 87-47, behind 22 points from reserve forward Dennis Horner’s 22 points and 18 points and 13 boards from junior forward Brandon Costner of Montclair, N.J.

Calvin Baker and Jeff Jones (Pictured) each scored 18 points to lead the Cavaliers. Sammy Zeglinski added 11 points and Jerome Meyinsse 10 for Virginia. Former Queens Holy Cross star Sylven Landesberg managed just 2 points on 0-5 shooting.

TAYLOR, THOMAS LEAD KU

Behind a combined 41 points from freshman Mario Little and former St. Anthony star Tyshawn Taylor, Kansas defeated Ottawa University 95-60 Sunday evening.

Little and Taylor combined for 17-21 shooting with Taylor (pictured) scoring a game-high 21 points and Little 20. All 11 Jayhawks who suited up scored in the victory, with freshman forward Quintrell Thomas of St. Patrick of Elizabeth adding 11 points and sophomore center Cole Aldrich 10 on 5-of-5 shooting. Thomas led all rebounders with eight boards, while Aldrich and Little pulled down seven each.

The victory made KU 3-0 on its 2008 Canada exhibition tour.

“We played well tonight. I think we caught Ottawa on a bad night,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It wasn’t the same team that played South Alabama (to wire) last night. They missed some shots. It was a good three games for us. Somebody told me McGill would be competitive but it’d be a game we could play a lot of guys. They played us great. Carleton is a team that could be competitive in a lot of leagues in the NCAA. And Ottawa has a good team, but didn’t shoot it tonight.”
