Carson, Ajavon to Play Overseas

Former Rutgers star Essence Carson of Paterson, N.J. scored a career-high 19 points Thursday but the Liberty lost to the Chicago Sky, 69-60.

I’m doing a story for next week on Carson and former RU teammate Matee Ajavon of the Houston Comets and I found it interesting that both players will be going overseas after the WNBA season ends.

“I’m going to Riga, Latvia, that’s where I’m going,” Carson said. “I heard it’s a beautiful city, beautiful town.”

I told Essence that my grandfather’s family came to the U.S. from Riga early in the 1900s. Max Zagoria was one of seven Zagoria brothers, six of whom left Czarist Russia for the promise of a better life in Somerville,  N.J.

Ajavon will play for Spartek in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Ajavon said.
