Findlay Downs St. Patrick, 71-70

Hoophall Classic highlights: St. Patrick’s Kyrie Irving (Duke) and Michael Gilchrist (Undecided)

In an epic battle of two of the best teams in the nation, Findlay (Nev.) Prep beat Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick 71-70 Monday at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.

Duke-bound guard Kyrie Irving had 30 points for St. Pat’s.

Undecided senior guard Cory Joseph scored 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting and 9 rebounds for Findlay.

Irving cut the lead to 71-70 on a free throw.

Findlay coach Michael Peck iced him with a timeout and Irving then missed the second foul shot.

Michael Gilchrist tried to score off the missed free throw but was blocked trying to score the game winner.

St. Pat’s coach Kevin Boyle ran onto the floor, sans tie and jacket, and pleaded with the refs for a foul call, but they said the block was clean.

“I think they did a fabulous job. I haven’t been more proud of our team since last April, when they won the whole thing,” Peck told ESPNU.
